What are Your Weaknesses? – Sample Answer

What are Your Weaknesses? – Sample Answer

hi it’s Linda Rayner of Linda Raynor comm career strategist speaker and coach and in this video I’m going to teach you three steps on how to prepare for and answer the what are your weaknesses interview question so that you can not only make it to the next round of interviews but also ideally land the job offer now before we go in-depth into what a good weakness is we need to first understand what a good weakness is not so there are two things that your weakness is not your weakness is not a personality trait and secondly your weakness is not a strength in disguise so firstly your weaknesses are not your personality traits in the job interview world weaknesses are things that can be improved on there are things that can be fixed or corrected your personality traits on the other hand are natural inherent traits within you that really nobody can fix unless you fix that yourself or change that yourself so when you say something like I’m impatient as a weakness that tells your employer that they’re going to have an employee who’s impatient pretty much all the time it’s not something that anybody can fix and change it’s just part of who you are which is why using a personality trait as a weakness is not a good idea and secondly your weakness is not a strength in disguise I’ve seen a lot of people use this example and try to get away with saying things like I work too hard as being a witness or I’m a perfectionist and you know it’s pretty transparent and clear to the recruiter and hiring manager what you’re trying to do when you use these it’s it’s almost like a cop-out for really explaining what your genuine weakness is and as a result I would highly recommend you not use those as examples of weaknesses so now you know what a weakness is not let’s talk about what a weakness is a weakness is an issue or concern that occurs in a certain context that you have improved and continue to improve on so for example instead of saying I’m impatient you may say something like in situations where there’s a deadline to be met I tend to want things to be done quickly and efficiently and in these situations I’ve tended to finish my tasks quickly and consistently ask for status update from my co-workers this has made me appear to be impatient in front of others so in this situation they’re describing the context when the weakness occurs so that’s what you want to do you want to make sure that it’s within a specific context or situation so that it doesn’t appear that it’s something that you do on a consistent basis it’s just when this type of situation happens this is the weakness that tends to come up within me then you would say what you did and are doing to improve on this weakness so you would say as a result I’ve learned to be cognizant of this fact and no longer try to constantly update myself on what my coworkers are up to as often instead I’ve implemented weekly meetings where everyone comes to the table and with their updates and that has bled to greater efficiency for everyone involved so what can you do to figure out your weaknesses step one is to brainstorm a list of your current and past weaknesses or concerns that you have about yourself these are private lists so nobody needs to see them literally take out a sheet of paper divide them into two columns and start coming up with things that you feel are certain areas for improvement within yourself just list them now step two is to highlight the weaknesses that tend to occur only in a certain context or situation generally this is going to be the majority of the weaknesses that you list out but think of the ones that you know can be applied in a professional setting it’s not something that happens all the time but when the situation comes up at work you tend to be a certain way so that’s what you want to think of and finally step 3 pick one current and one past weakness and develop a story for each so remember these weaknesses only occur when certain situations happen so you want to think of the situation and how you’re going to frame it in order to develop your story and as a bonus I’m including some fill in the blank lines that you can use to help you develop your story so here are some helpful lines to get you started the first one is in situations where and then this is where you would insert your context or situation I have tended to or 10/2 and this is where you exhibit this weakness not the weakness itself so you’re kind of describing what you tend to do in this situation this has made me appear and this is where you would insert your weakness so in our case it was this has made me appear impatient in front of others but you’re again not saying that you are an impatient person as a result I’ve learned to be cognizant of this fact and no longer insert the way you exhibit this weakness so again it will go back to the second line that you filled in instead I now insert your solution that resolves this weakness and finally this has resulted in insert your successful results so it could be a quantifiable result or it could just be an improved efficiency or time savings in some area whatever it may be so now you know how to answer the what are your weaknesses interview question but do you know if your resume is still up to par feel free to download a copy of my ten ultimate resume hacks cheat sheet 1. I know this a just a short answer but what do you think?
I used to have some problem with work management because I am too focussing on one job until its completion before starting on another. But I have learned to work on many projects at the same time and I also have joined several activities throughout my degree life which helps me to improve on this matter.

  2. ❓WHAT IS YOUR WEAKNESS?

👩💭"Sometimes I can be overly critical of my own work. In the past, I have spent a good amount of time proofreading everything to ensure that it was perfect. Now I have learned to trust my instincts and not spend so much time obsessing over the little things. That may delay a project."

👩💭"My primary weakness in the workplace surrounds my technical abilities. I consider myself a beginner level user in Excel, so I have decided to start a course this fall to expand on those skills."

  3. I don't agree with "a weekness isn't a strength in disguise" why? Because my weekends is I have work anxiety meaning no matter how good of a job someone tells me I'm doing I push myself to do a better job. Example my boss told me once at my old job "hey keep up the good work you're doing great" I pushed myself to get more done, I worked harder and faster at said job because even tho she said I was doing great I felt I could do even better and will never be satisfied so I will always want to improve. Example you're a stocker and need to get 100 cases done in x time I try to get 150-200 once I hit that goal I shoot for 300 you get the point

  4. Thanks Linda for all the tips you gave. It helped me to get a job offer!! I will be starting next week. All your videos are excellent.

  5. These "right" answers are way too long and wordy they sound like worse bullshit than the "wrong" answers! That's my opinion!!

  6. Hi Linda! Thanks! You are in the right field!. You are a natural speaker. And very well expleined. thAnks again and Take care.🙂

  7. i feel no one is going to share their real weaknesses….and the interviewer knows that. i feel one shld be honest and humourous. we can say i am a foodie…or i love watching hollywood movies….or i like to read romantic movies.

  8. Should you answer your interviewer like you would write a paper or should your answer be more conversational? The answer you gave sounded more like something I'd write on a paper or say in a presentation rather than something I'd say in a conversation.

  9. My greatest weakness is afraid of heights but I can control it and this is not a hindrance in making my dream come true to work in the hotel 🙂

  10. I've actually said interviewing for a job is a weakness of mine. Which it really is and I just list the ways I'm trying to improve and steps I'm taking to get better. Scary thing is that if I dont interview well at that moment then it might look bad as though I haven't improved yet. Might have to come up with something else.

  11. I like how Linda's smile is the same on every thumbnail of every video and even throughout every video…
How did you get your smile permed? Is there surgery for that now?

  12. Being honest about your weaknesses will put you in a place to take fewer punches and minimize being knocked off your path to success. Taking on the challenges of life, business, work, health, and family means you will have to take and throw a lot of punches. Thank you!

  13. i like the way you speak the way you deliver your voice its so nice to hear i like it,how to be you mam

  14. I've watched several YouTube channels about the same topic but your explanation and examples have made this more clear for me. Thank you, from 2 years in the future.

  15. I'm here because I'm stalking a normie for the intrety of the mean comment I left them, and my own curiosty.

  16. I hate that you used the word "fix" in reference to personality traits. Just say "change" or "improve." It sounds very high and mighty to say "fix."

  17. Hiring managers and HR are tired of hearing strength in disguise. That used to work in 80's. Then I still hear some managers still advise some interns to use that strategy. I just heard that last week from my superior to give an advice to the outgoing intern using strength in disguise. I did not say anything to ruin my future. Good luck to that intern
Your video is very helpful. We do show our weakness without hurting ourselves. Getting advice from you will do well on the interview 99%. It will not work on my supervisor and those people still live in the 80's.

  19. I’ve watched so many videos and I still can’t figure out how to answer this question for myself. I’ve been a hairstylist for 15 years changing careers to admin went to school for it. Did admin before hair long time ago. Soooo I don’t really work with other people, have bosses or deadlines. I know how to deal with crazy clients and be a therapist. My real weakness is I’m too sensitive, which can hinder me but it also allows me to help people because I’m very intuitive. I can’t say that though.

  20. Thank you so much for helping
You are doing amazing job 🙏🌹. May God bless you with all that you desire in life.

  21. I swear I’m not being funny, but if HR want me to be honest I’ll tell them: I’m not a team player, I don’t like managers, in fact I hate managers, I also hate coworkers! Is that so wrong???

  22. you need me to help you what are your weaknesses? you first are you expanding or just cant keep employees. tell me about the employees who left and be honest.

  23. Being Human,,
    that's our biggest weakness.
    Humans are flawed.
Nobody can be perfect so don't try to be.
Just live & enjoy life ..
Youth is the most precious thing
It doesn't last long So enjoy it

  24. Hello Linda thank you for the video that you made but you are so fast need you speak more slowly thank you

  25. I had to ask the interviewer to repeat the question for three questions. I figure it's better to do that than go completely off track

  26. My answer: We all have weakness and I am no exception. I get annoyed with people who do not keep their appointments. I also get annoyed when my boys do not take their career and family seriously. For instance I get annoyed when one fine morning I receive a call from one of my boys that he is not coming to office today especially when you having an important task to be accomplished for presenting in the meeting. This makes me to do the task all over again at the 11th hour requesting my boss to delay the meeting for 2 hrs. So now I have learnt not to depend on anyone and always have a back up plan for the same to avert the situation. Thanks, Regards.

  27. The truth is no one who is an experienced interviewer would ever ask that questions as it measures nothing. Smart interviewers will ask behavioral questions.
