Singleton Primary School : Advertising detectives get savvy

>>Advertising detectives. And you will notice this group
and this group here, you have some magnifying glasses and some hats, and you’re going
to be the detectives for the poster activity. So what you’re going to do today, you have a selection
of posters on your desk, and you have to find out
who the advertiser is. And when you’ve discovered
that with your magnifying glasses, you’re going to go through and look
for all those tricks and gimmicks that we’ve been looking at, that advertisers use to try and persuade you to do the right thing
and buy their product. So this is the fourth year
that I’ve been working with Moneysmart and had the same year level, luckily. So we started with needs
and wants a little bit, just to concrete what they know. And then, yeah, the preparation side has become easier. The first few years
it did take a while. I changed a few things, I made
the detective glasses as tangible, so they could actually
carry them around, and normally they would have it
on their desk every time they do it, and then they place it back. It’s really good
for imaginative and persuasive writing, and factual writing, so they’ve done
reports on what they’ve said, or they’re in there
at the moment; they’re in the middle of doing, like,
a little advertisement at home for Homeware, where they have
to sell an apple, that’s part of the Moneysmart routine. And then one of the other ones
is the rate, so that was quite complicated, using multiplication and division; you know, finding out how many times that ad was shown. And then if you watched it for five days,
or two weeks, they’d have to use multiplication
to find out, you know, how much they were exposed
to that particular advertisement. There’s a lot of the activities you can actually set for home, so like the TV one and doing the rate, and the ratio of how many times
the ads come up. And they get their whole family
involved in those. I’ve been doing the, Who Wants to Buy an Apple assignment, I send that home, and it’s quite amazing the parent involvement that happens, and all their tricks
that they come up with, so they’re able to apply
what they know onto their poster, or onto their — they do a little video,
and then we watch it, and some people put the sound
or a jingling music in. And it’s just a very effective way
of finishing off the unit.>>Yeah.>>And they’ve given lots
of examples of the same ad, because your eye is going
to go to that one. But then, you might like
green better than red.>>So I feel quite comfortable
with it myself, and I’ve chosen today activities that I know they’re very engaged with. And they all look at brochures
all the time; they had
the Christmas brochures come out or the Easter brochure come out. And they really do get carried away by the size
of the picture, or the big half-price — you know, we talk about
these sorts of things. So they’re very good at discovering
what’s in there that’s trying to influence them. So they all have success at their level. So that our ability grades, I use the Kagan’s
Cooperative Learning, so there’ll be
a higher achiever, you know, a more critical thinker with somebody
who [INAUDIBLE] order thinking, and they will assist each other
and help each other, and they’re allowed to do
partner work and group work. So they’re feeling very safe, and it’s work where
you can use the Smartboard, so they’re actually seeing the — you know, they’re hearing
the sounds and the jingles. And they just straight away get it. And some of my really jumpy ones are just so switched on, because the animation is really
taking effect, or the music. And yeah, they have a lot of success.
