San Diego Advertising Agencies: How To Jump Start Your Business With 84 Customers From Deal Sites


Ryan: Hi, Ryan Steinolfson here with Accelerate
Marketing and today I have Darcy Kempton from Simply Stunning Space. And, now, Darcy, you,
you’ve built your business really with deal sites. So give us some insight in, in to how
you did that, what the results were, etc. Darcy: Okay, sure. Well, I started in 2010
I started my business. I had really no clue on where to get business other than referrals
and that really wasn’t a sustainable business model so I contacted Groupon. I contacted
Living Social, Amazon Local. The first one that called me back was Living Social and
they said, “You know, we can’t run a deal for you because you don’t have any reviews
online and we need a minimum of three reviews online before we can run a deal for you.”
So I said, “Okay. I need reviews.” (Laughs). So I went to Yelp and I, you know, sent it
out to my previous client and just started building up my reviews on Yelp because that
was the only one I really knew about. So and then to them that was important. So, yeah,
I contacted them again like three months later and said, “Hey, I have reviews. Check me out.”
And so the deal I ran with them was a, my two-hour consultations for interior design
are usually $249 but I discounted that to $99 and they ran that deal. The first deal
I ran sold 84 consultations in one day. Ryan: Wow. Darcy: And so that really did it launched
my business. And from there, you know, I just, I had an offer ready for them when I met with
them so I was able to up-sell them. Ryan: So what you did is you, you really built
your business from the deal sites by offering a significant discount over what you normally
offer that initially package for and then when somebody came in, or when you went out
and met with a client for that two, normally $249 package you up-sold them to a higher
level package, probably maybe 30, 40, 50% of the time, I guess? Darcy: Yeah, I’d say when I first started
it was one out of five people that I met with would want additional services. And those,
you know, those packages range anywhere from 1000 to $8000, so it really was worth it me
to do the deal so, you know. I looked at it as they’ve got a huge list that they’re emailing
to and I have no list so that was one way for me to help, you know, build my biz, my
list. And, you know, the one thing that I made sure to do because with Groupon and Living
Social, they’re not going to give you the email address of the person that purchased
from you. You have to ask your customer for their email address. So that’s one tip I can
give you. Ryan: Thank you, Darcy, for giving us insight.
