Online used car ad scam targets Roanoke woman

TARGETED THE ROANOKE AREA. ONE LOCAL WOMAN NARROWLY AVOIDED LOSING MORE THAN A THOUSAND- DOLLARS AFTER REALIZING SHE WAS ABOUT TO BE SCAMMED. IT’S A SCAM THAT COULD SEEM CONVINCING. WSLS 10’S TOMMY LOPEZ SHARES HER STORY AND EXPLAINS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IN THIS 10 NEWS CRIME TRACKER REPORT. IT’S A NINE-YEAR- OLD DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. MORE THAN THREE-THOUSAND DOLLARS BELOW MARKET VALUE. IT LOOKED LIKE A GOOD DEAL. JERRI HEENAN, ROANOKE RESIDENT, :09-:14: “I’VE ALWAYS PRIDED MYSELF IN BEING SO CAUTIOUS. I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED HERE.” JERRI HEENAN LIVES IN ROANOKE. SHE FOUND AN AD ON CRAIGSLIST FOR JUST THE CAR SHE WANTED. EMAILING BACK AND FORTH WITH THE SELLER. WHO WANTED HER TO BUY EBAY CARDS AT A LOCAL GROCERY OR DRUG STORE TO PAY FOR IT. SHE SAYS SHE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE GONE THROUGH WITH IT IF NOT FOR ADVICE FROM TWO OF HER FRIENDS. SHE DECIDED TO CALL EBAY. HEENAN: SHE SAID, ‘NO, THAT’S A SCAM.’ AN EBAY REPRESENTATIVE CONFIRMED TO US THAT THIS IS A SCAM. EBAY DOESN’T USE ITS CARDS FOR CARS. IT MAKES IT TOO EASY FOR SCAMMERS. THE SELLER TOLD HEENAN THE CAR WAS HER HUSBAND’S, AND DIED RECENTLY. HEENAN: I THOUGHT THAT WAS A SAFETY NET FOR HER. SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH A LOT OF STRANGERS. LOPEZ: SO YOU WERE SYMPATHETIC BECAUSE THAT STORY SEEMED SAD. HEENAN: IT DID AND IT SEEMED BELIEVABLE. THE SELLER CLAIMED TO BE IN TUSCON, ARIZONA AND WAS GOING TO SHIP THE VAN TO ROANOKE. HEENAN NEVER TALKED TO THE SELLER OVER THE PHONE. SCOTT LEAMON, ROANOKE POLICE DEPARTMENT CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST, 1:06- 1:11: THERE’S ALWAYS AN EXCUSE AS TO WHY THEY CAN’T MEET YOU FACE TO FACE, THEN NO MATTER HOW GOOD OF A DEAL IT IS, I WOULD GO AHEAD AND MOVE ON. POLICE SAY SERVICES LIKE CRAIGSLIST AND EBAY ARE GENERALLY GOOD ABOUT PREVENTING SCAMS. THEY DON’T WANT THEIR CUSTOMERS TO FALL VICTIM. YOU CAN ALWAYS CHECK THEIR SAFETY GUIDELINES. THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU IF SOMEONE TRIES TO SCAM YOU. THEY TRACK CASES. THEY SAY BE CAREFUL WITH ANYONE THAT WANTS TO SHIP YOU SOMETHING. JULIE WHEELER, BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, 1:31-1:36: THAT’S THE RED FLAG. THEY DON’T HAVE IT TO SELL OR IT IS NOT AS IT’S REPRESENTED. THERE ARE MANY SAFE PLACES TO MEET FOR BUYS LIKE THESE, INCLUDING THE ROANOKE POLICE DEPARTMENT’S LOBBY. HEENAN IS STILL LOOKING FOR A NEW VAN. SHE SAYS NOW SHE’S MORE AWARE OF THE DANGERS. IN ROANOKE, TOMMY LOPEZ, WSLS 10.
