How Post Malone Created ‘Psycho’ | Billboard | How It Went Down

– I’m Post Malone, and this is How It Went
Down with my song Psycho. Oh! Precursor to the story, I don’t have any sounds on my computer. I just use Stock FL fruity loop stuff, and even the drums, and I just
like to get the idea across. So, I did. I remember doing the pads for it and then doing the little, I guess they’re kind of bell type deals, and then just putting a drum beat over it, like no 808s or nothing,
just absolute shit FL drums. Making the beat, I always
had that melody in my head, and I kept singing it over and over again. (humming) It’s just that over and over again. It’s like a nursery rhyme. And that’s how the beat was made, and Lou Bell beefed it up
and made it (bleep) awesome. Lou is such a sweet, funny, genuine dude. Tell him to turn around and close his eyes and then play six notes
in a row on a keyboard and then he’ll tell you he
can play it back for you. I usually bring all my ideas to him, and then we just build on ’em together because he’s such a smart dude. He knows frequencies and shit that are are pleasant to the ear, and he’s just the smartest
person, musically and otherwise, that I know, and he kicks ass. Ty Dolla $ign came over to the studio and we just sat and (bleep)
around for a little bit, played guitar and stuff. And then I played Psycho and he just… He (bleep) with the melody and he kept singing it over the… We had an open verse at that
time and then he’d go in there and (bleep) around and he did
and then it worked perfectly. I don’t know. There’s some lines where
it’s super feelin’ yourself, and that’s what my music kind
of is and kind of how I am. You know, sometimes it’s
fun to (bleep) around and get into trouble and shit,
but at the end of the day, it’s all, you know, it all comes back around and
that’s not (bleep) everything. I don’t know. I think there’s a lot of shit. Me kind of being, I guess, hypocritical and saying
hey, look at my shit and then, oh, I’m scared
you’re going to take my shit. But that’s kind of what it’s
like, you know what I mean? There’s a lot of shit that goes on, and you want to have a good time and you want to experience everything, but there’s always going to be bad people that want to do bad shit to ya. So, I don’t know. That’s it, really.
