How Ally Brooke Created ‘Lips Don’t Lie’ | Billboard | How It Went Down

– Hey everyone, I’m Ally Brooke and this is How It Went
Down with my single Lips Don’t Lie. I was beginning my solo
career, solo journey, and I had an A&R meeting. And the A&R played a
bunch of different songs, I heard the first song,
cool, second song, okay, third song, fourth song,
and then all of a sudden I hear this new song, and
it goes dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun
dun dun dun on the piano. I’m like, whoa, this beat is crazy and within the first few seconds
of hearing the first verse I was hooked. I literally turned to the A&R and I said, “This is my record. I need this record.” I totally fell in love with it! So, weeks went by, weeks went
by and then months went by. And finally I was pullin’ up to the studio and I was prepared to
record Lips Don’t Lie. I was so excited, my favorite song, and then I get there, roll the window down
in front of the studio, and the A&R comes to me and
says, “We don’t have the files.” So, I waited week after week after week and finally I waited patiently
and we got the files! And I recorded it, I think it
was the day before Halloween. So, the studio was decorated
with like skeletons and spiders and spiderwebs. I went in there with the
producer, Oscar Gorres he flew in from Sweden
to record this record. And together we were just
having so much fun in the studio and I think that day we had sushi. I can’t really remember, but
I’m pretty sure we had sushi. Or wait no, was it Baja Fresh, hold on, I think I had, or Mexican food? No, I think it was sushi. Yup, I’m just gonna stick with sushi. We’re in there vibing,
having an amazing time and I just put my whole
flow and spin and flavor and personality into this record. I really zoned in to give
this record my flavor and my character. Finally I heard the record
back and I was like, whoa this is awesome! So we’re like okay who can really come in and really kill this and bring a whole new like
breath of life to this record? I remember being on Spotify
and I heard A Boogie. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. And, we made a few calls
and he jumped on it. He was able to still
incorporate some melodies but also his own flow and
rhythm and his own cadence. And again, that like signature
tone that A Boogie had. I’m like, man this is
just, this is perfect. I am totally in love with what he did, and then voila, that is how
Lips Don’t Like came to be.
