CBC News Special: Canada Day 2019

>>WELCOME TO CANADA’S BIG BIRTHDAY. (♪♪♪)>>>HEY, EVERYBODY, I’M ROSEMARY BARDON.>>AND I’M ANDREW CHANG.>>HAPPY CANADA DAY! WELCOME TO OTTAWA.>>I’M NORMALLY NOT HERE.>>THERE YOU GO.>>HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL OF YOU FOLKS JOINING US FOR THIS SPECIAL. THIS IS HOME BASE FOR US FOR THE NEXT THREE HOURS AND A BEAUTIFUL DESK AND A BEAUTIFUL BACKGROUND AND IT’S A LOVELY DAY. SO WEATHER-WISE IT’S A REALLY IMPORTANT PART OF THE STORY RIGHT NOW, RIGHT? BECAUSE WEATHER-WISE WE’RE USED TO GETTING EVERYTHING BUT EVEN ON CANADA DAY SPECIFICALLY, RIGHT, FROM RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS AND –>>LOTS OF HUMIDITY. LIKE 40° OR SOMETHING CRAZY LIKE THAT. AND THERE’S OFTEN A THUNDERSTORM. SO THIS IS WHAT WE WANT AND THIS MEANS THAT PEOPLE WILL SHOW UP AND THEY’LL HAVE A GOOD PARTY AND NO ONE WILL PASS IT UP.>>IT IS A GOOD THING. AND YOU TALK ABOUT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT COULD SHOW UP. AND SO RIGHT NOW IT’S AFTER 11:00 IN THE MORNING AND THE BIG SHOW AT 12:00, A BIT AFTER THAT. AND THE CAPACITY HERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL 30,000 PLUS PEOPLE AND RIGHT NOW THERE’S LIKE 4,000.>>AND SECURITY AS YOU KNOW THROUGH THE YEARS HAS CHANGED A BIT FROM THE SORT OF DEBACLE THAT WE HAD IN 2017 TO THE WAY THAT IT WORKS NOW SO IT IS A LONGER PROCESS TO GET UP HERE SO MORE PEOPLE WE CAN SEE WHERE WE ARE ARE STREAMING UP AS WE SIT HERE. AND I SHOULD POINT OUT TO PEOPLE THAT CENTRE BLOCK IS BEAUTIFUL, AND IT’S CURRENTLY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE NEXT 10 TO 15 YEARS AS IT UNDERGOES MASSIVE RENOVATIONS INSIDE AND OUT. THAT ALSO MEANS THAT THE KIND OF PARTY THAT WE’RE GOING TO SEE HERE TODAY WILL BE, YOU KNOW, MUTED AND UNDERSTATED FOR THE NEXT DECADE OR SO. SO NOT THAT IT’S YOUR LAST CHANCE TO PARTY BUT THE LAST CHANCE THAT THERE WILL BE SOMETHING LIKE THIS. PEOPLE ARE WAVING AT US.>>WE SHOULD PARTY LIKE IT’S THE LAST TIME FOR A WHILE. BUT YOU LOOK AT THE CROWD, BOY, THAT SEA OF RED AND WHITE. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT. SO OVER THE COURSE OF THIS PROGRAMME WE ARE GOING TO BE GIVING PEOPLE A SNAPSHOT ABOUT HOW PEOPLE ARE CELEBRATING ACROSS THE COUNTRY FROM COAST-TO-COAST-TO-COAST BUT WE WANT TO START HERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL.>>WE HAVE TWO OF OUR BEST REPORTERS DOWN AND IN THE CROWD. SALIMAH SHIVJI FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY BUREAU. THERE SHE IS. SHE WILL TALK ABOUT THE DIPLOMATS AND THE PRIME MINISTER SHE’LL TALK TO AND THE CROWD AROUND HER. AND TASHAUNA REID, SHE’S ON THE STAGE I THINK, NOT EVEN BEHIND THE STAGE BUT ACTUALLY ON THE STAGE AND SHE’LL TALK TO THE CROWD TOO AND ALSO TO THE CELEBRITIES AND THE MUSICAL GUESTS AND THE ENTERTAINERS SO WE’LL TALK TO YOU IN A COUPLE MINUTES’ TIME.>>SO OVER THE COURSE OF THIS PROGRAMME THERE’S A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND THERE’S STARS THAT WILL BE HERE AND MUSICIANS AND IT’S GOING TO BE, YOU KNOW, QUITE A PERFORMANCE STARTING AT NOON. K’NAAN AND ALAN DOYLE OF GREAT BIG SEA BUT BEFORE ALL OF THAT STARTS ROLLING WE’LL SEE THE KIND OF PROCESSION GOING THROUGH.>>THE POMP AND THE CIRCUMSTANCE THAT WE LIKE, YEAH, YEAH. AND THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL IS ACTUALLY ARRIVING BY KAYAK. SO SHE’S A BIT OF A FITNESS NUT –>>THIS ISN’T UNUSUAL FOR HER?>>NO, THAT’S PART OF HER MANDATE IS GETTING PEOPLE TO BE ACTIVE. LAST YEAR EVEN IN THE HEAT SHE SHOWED UP ON A BIKE WHICH WAS CRAZY. BECAUSE NORMALLY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL ARRIVES IN A HORSE AND CARRIAGE. BUT SHE LIKES TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY SO SHE’LL PULL UP ON A KAYAK APPARENTLY ON THE RIDEAU CANAL IN A LITTLE BIT LATER.>>DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY, THAT’S PAR FOR THE COURSE. SO WE TALKED ABOUT HOW WE’LL TAKE YOU AND SHOW YOU A SMATTERING OF WHAT IS HAPPENING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SO WE HAVE REPORTERS STATIONED RIGHT ACROSS CANADA AS I SAID BEFORE, OF COURSE, STARTING RIGHT HERE WHERE THE BIG SHOW IS IN OTTAWA ON PARLIAMENT HILL. BUT WE’VE GOT A REPORTER IN CHARLOTTETOWN WHO WE’LL TOUCH BASE WITH, AND IN CALGARY AND STEEVESTON, B.C., BEAUTIFUL PLACE. AND UP NORTH IN IQALUIT AND DOWN IN TORONTO. SO A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO.>>AND I HAVE BEEN TO EVERY PLACE THERE BUT STEEVESTON.>>STEEVESTON IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL. AND I WAS IN VANCOUVER A COUPLE WEEKS AGO AND MY ONE REGRET IS THAT I DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO GO TO STEEVESTON. A BEAUTIFUL PLACE, ABSOLUTELY.>>SO WE’LL LOOK FORWARD TO TALKING TO EVERYBODY CELEBRATING ACROSS THE COUNTRY BUT LET’S START OFF WITH SALIMAH SHIVJI AND SHE’S IN THE CROWD AND AWAITING THE VERY PERSPECTIVE PEOPLE THAT WILL ARRIVE. BUT UNTIL THEN YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING TO THE CROWD A BIT AND FINDING OUT WHY THEY HAVE COME UP TODAY TO CELEBRATE.>>Reporter: I HAVE BEEN, ROSIE, AND QUITE FRANKLY, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GLAD THAT IT’S A SUNNY DAY BUT THERE’S A BREEZE HERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL AND YOU CAN FEEL THE WIND PICKING UP SO PEOPLE ARE LOVING IT OUT HERE. AND PEOPLE CAME HERE EARLY TO STAKE OUT A GOOD SPOT. AND HEARING FROM SOME PEOPLE THAT SECURITY WAS GREAT AND A LOT BETTER THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS AND IT DIDN’T TAKE TOO LONG TO GET UP HERE AS THERE’S ALREADY SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE UP HERE. BUT THE CROWD IS GATHERING AND A LOT OF RED AND WHITE AS YOU MENTIONED AND PEOPLE ARE DECKED OUT AND PEOPLE COMING FOR SPECIAL REASONS TO SEE CERTAIN PEOPLE. I ACTUALLY FOUND A FAMILY, A BUNCH OF COUSINS AND ALL HANGING OUT HERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL AND DECKED OUT IN LOVELY OUTFITS AND I WANTED TO ASK THEM, GUYS, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THIS CANADA DAY FESTIVITY?>>TO SEE THE FIREWORKS AND TO SEE EVERYBODY HAPPY.>>Reporter: EVERYBODY HAPPY? THAT’S FANTASTIC. HAVE YOU SEEN EVERYBODY HAPPY ALREADY?>>YES.>>Reporter: HOW ABOUT YOU, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO?>>THE AIRPLANES.>>Reporter: SO MUCH FUN. I LOVE THE SNOWBIRD FLY-BY. HOW ABOUT YOU?>>I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PERFORMANCE ON THE STAGE.>>Reporter: YEAH, THE GREAT MUSIC, AND ALL OF THE GREAT MUSIC AND YOU GUYS ARE ALL WEARING FESTIVE GEAR. THIS IS ONE EXAMPLE, ROSIE AND ANDREW, OF THE EXCITEMENT ON THE HILL ALREADY AND THEY HAVE BEEN HERE A COUPLE HOURS AND STAKED OUT A GOOD SPOT TO SEE EVERYTHING AS THEY WAIT FOR THE SHOW TO GET UNDERWAY.>>I’D LIKE TO SAY THAT I’M NOTICING YOUR NAILS COORDINATING THERE, SALIMAH, THE RED AND WHITE. SO JUST IN CASE –>>Reporter: WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE MY TOENAILS. CHECK IT OUT.>>VERY COORDINATED. VERY GOOD. [laughter]>>I LOVE HOW THOSE KIDS BASICALLY SUMMARIZED THE WHOLE DAY, LIKE THE PERFORMANCES AND THE SNOWBIRDS, IT’S ALL GOING TO BE GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH, SALIMAH. AND THE SECURITY SITUATION, THAT IS A REALLY IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PUZZLE, RIGHT? THERE’S ONE WAY TO GET IN AND THAT’S OVER BY THE SUPREME COURT AND MANY WAYS TO EXIT, OBVIOUSLY, BUT ONE WAY TO GET IN AND THEY CHECK BAGS AND SO FAR SO GOOD AND IT’S A STREAMLINED PROCESS WHICH IS A CHANGE FROM HOW THINGS WENT A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS RAINING AND THUNDERING AND PEOPLE NEEDED LIKE EIGHT HOURS.>>IT WAS ALSO THE 150th BIRTHDAY SO THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE.>>AND TASHAUNA REID IS ALSO MINGLING IN THE CROWD BUT YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT FOCUS AND YOU’LL TALK TO SOME OF THE STARS WHO WILL BE PERFORMING INCLUDING ONE ALEXANDER SHELLY.>>THAT’S RIGHT. IT’S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU GUYS AND HAPPY CANADA DAY. I’M HERE WITH ALEXANDER SHELLY, THE MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE ORCHESTRA. AND, YOU KNOW, THE ORCHESTRA PLAYS A VERY SPECIAL ROLE IN THE NOON SHOW. TELL US WHAT IS IN STORE FOR THE AUDIENCE?>>WELL, WE ARE DELIGHTED TO BE HERE AND IT’S AN AMAZING DAY AND THE ATMOSPHERE IS AMAZING AND WE’LL BE ON STAGE FOR 90 MINUTES FOR MID-DAY AND IT’S A PRIVILEGE AND WE’LL BACK AN AMAZING LINEUP OF SINGERS AND ARTISTS A HAVE K’N DOYLE AND SO I CAN’T WAIT.>>Reporter: IT’S TRUE, I CHECKED OUT THE REHEARSALS AND AN AMAZING SHOW IN STORE AND A SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY THE NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE ORCHESTRA. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT ONE?>>WE COMMISSIONED A WORK BASED ON THE LIFE OF AMANDA TODD, THIS YOUNG GIRL WHO WAS DRIVEN TO SUICIDE THROUGH CYBERBULLYING. AND THE PIECE IS WRITTEN BY A CANADIAN AND IT’S A MOVING ORCHESTERAL PIECE. AND WE ARE THRILLED TO PRESENT IT HERE BECAUSE IT’S AN IMPORTANT STORY AND SHE WAS AN AMAZING YOUNG WOMAN. AND IT’S A SERIOUS THEME BUT I THINK THAT IT’S SOMETHING TO BE THINKING ABOUT ON A DAY LIKE THIS.>>Reporter: AND, ALEXANDER, I WANT TO GET IN A PERSONAL NOTE BECAUSE YOUR FAMILY EXPANDED BY ONE MEMBER LAST SUMMER WITH THE BIRTH OF YOUR SON. AND I WANTED TO FIND OUT HOW YOU’RE CELEBRATING AS A FAMILY AND IT’S HIS FIRST CANADIAN DAY AND YOU HAVE A CANADIAN SON, WHAT IS IT LIKE FOR YOU?>>I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR FOUR OR FIVE YEARS AND I FEEL A BIT CANADIAN, YOU MAY HEAR MY BRITAIN ACCENT, AND HE WAS BORN HERE LAST AUGUST. THIS IS OUR FIRST CANADA DAY AS A FAMILY AND WE HAD THE FLAGS OUT THIS MORNING AND WE TOOK A PHOTO TOGETHER AND I AM THRILLED AND, YOU KNOW, I HOPE THAT IT’S GOING TO BE A BIG PART OF HIS LIFE.>>Reporter: AMAZING. WELL, WE KNOW THAT YOU HAVE TO GET BACKSTAGE AND GET READY TO GO, BUT WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE PERFORMANCES. AND BACK TO YOU GUYS.>>THANK YOU SO MUCH.>>THAT WILL BE FUN TO HAVE THE ORCHESTRA SORT OF BACK THE –>>EPIC FEELING.>>THE OTHER THING THAT SHOULD MAKE THIS EPIC IS THE NUMBER OF PLACES THAT WE’LL BRING YOU TO ACROSS CANADA. SO LET’S CHECK IN WHERE OUR REPORTERS ARE AT THIS HOUR AND WE’LL START IN CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, WITH JAY SCOTLAND AND WE’LL AND BACK TO HIM IN A MOMENT. IT LOOKS DAMP THERE. BUT WE’LL COME BACK TO HIM IN A MINUTE TO SEE HOW PEOPLE ARE CELEBRATING IF THE WEATHER IS IMPACTING THINGS. AND HERE WE ARE IN IQALUIT WITH PAULINE, AND THAT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD TIME TOO. AND WITH HER IN A MOMENT. AND IN CALGARY, WE HAVE — LOOK AT THAT, THAT LOOKS LIKE A GREAT PLACE TO BE TODAY, EARLY THIS MORNING AS WELL. IN STEEVESTON, AND THAT’S AS ANDREW SAID A GREAT PLACE TO GO. AND I HAVEN’T BEEN BUT I’LL GO NOW. AND THERE’S ANITA BATHE AND IN TORONTO, THERE’S ALSO A BIG CELEBRATION WITH OUR GREG ROSS. NOT SWARMED BY RAPTORS FANS. BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE THERE CELEBRATING IN TORONTO. OKAY, LET’S HEAD FIRST THOUGH TO CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND AND JAY SCOTLAND. AND, JAY, I SEE THAT IT’S A LITTLE DAMP THERE. SO I EMPATHIZE WITH SOMEONE THAT HAD TO GO THROUGH THAT AS WELL. TELL ME HOW PEOPLE ARE CELEBRATING THERE TODAY?>>Reporter: YOU GUYS ARE STILL HAVING A GOOD TIME, RIGHT?>>YES.>>Reporter: LET’S TRY THIS. 3, 2, 1…>>HAPPY CANADA DAY! IT’S ABOUT 14° AND IT SHOULD BE ABOUT 21°, AND WE’RE STILL HAVING A GOOD TIME, RIGHT, GUYS AND I LOVE THE HATS THAT YOU GUYS HAVE HERE AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?>>CALEDONIA.>>Reporter: CALEDONIA, ONTARIO, RIGHT? MY HOMETOWN IS ABOUT 10 MINUTES AWAY. BACK — I’M A DUNDILLION, SO IF I GAVE A SHOUTOUT TO MY HIGH SCHOOL I WOULD BE A HERO. HAPPY CANADA DAY AS WELL. AND YOU GUYS ARE EXCITED BECAUSE WHAT WE HAVE OVER THERE, IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BOUNCING CASTLES AND WERE YOU EXCITED?>>YEAH.>>IN LIGHT OF TODAY’S RAIN, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT IT’S BEEN DONE AT VICTORIA PARK, IT’S A WATER PARK, ARE YOU EXCITED?>>YES.>>Reporter: I THINK THAT IT’S AN IMPROMPTU WATER PARK. AND WE ALSO HAVE FOLKS FROM OUTSIDE OF CANADA AS WELL. CAN I GET YOUR NAME?>>JOE ALEX.>>Reporter: FROM?>>MAINE.>>Reporter: SO YOU GET TO DO THIS IN A COUPLE DAYS, JULY 4th, INDEPENDENCE DAY. YOU HAVE THE CANADA FLAG THERE AND WE ARE HOPING FOR BETTER WEATHER WHEN YOU HEAD BACK TO MAINE FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY.>>HOPEFULLY SO.>>Reporter: IF YOU HEAR A LOUD KABOOM WE HAVE THE P.E.I. REGIMENT FIRING OFF — IT’S BEEN LOUD, RIGHT — NO THUNDER AT LEAST IN THE FORECAST. THERE’S LIVE ENTERTAINMENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY HERE AS WELL AS A BIG FIREWORK DISPLAY AT 10:00, WEATHER PERMITTING AND FINGERS AND TOES ARE CROSSED AND THE LARGEST EAST OF MONTRÉAL. SO YOU HOPEFULLY WILL STICK AROUND FOR THAT, RIGHT? SO WE’RE WELL HYDRATED AND STILL IN GOOD SPIRITS HERE IN CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. AM CAN WE GET ANOTHER HAPPY CANADA DAY IN 3, 2, 1…>>HAPPY CANADA DAY!>>Reporter: ROSEMARY AND ANDREW, BACK TO YOU.>>Rosemary: NOW, JAY, BEFORE YOU GO THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING A LIVING FLAG THERE, IS THAT RIGHT AND MAYBE NOW IT’S — YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE — IS THAT? HE’S GONE.>>Andrew: HE’S GONE.>>Rosemary: HE’S GONE. BECAUSE THERE WAS A LIVING FLAG DONE IN ONTARIO IN TRENTON.>>Andrew: AND GOING FOR THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD AND PEOPLE ARE FORMING THE MAPLE LEAF.>>Rosemary: 4,000 PEOPLE WERE DOING THAT. THERE’S JAY, LET’S SEE — JAY, IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO FORM A MINI FLAG OR IS IT JUST GOING TO BE –>>Reporter: WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO IT. YES. WE ARE HOPING — WELL, WE NEED 65 PEOPLE I BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO DO OUR LIVING FLAG. SO I SAW THAT ONE IN ONTARIO AND THAT WAS 4,000, I DON’T KNOW IF WE’LL DO 4,000 BUT IT WILL BE AN AWESOME FLAG, RIGHT?>>YEAH!>>Reporter: I CAN SEE MORE FOLK COMING IN AND WE’LL TRY TO BRING THAW LIVE LOOK AT OUR LIVING FLAG HERE FROM CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.>>Rosemary: THANK YOU, JAY. JUST REALLY STRETCH YOUR ARMS AND THAT WILL WORK.>>Andrew: IF ANYONE WAS EVER THINKING ABOUT FEELING BAD FOR THE FOLKS IN CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I., JAY SCOTLAND MADE IT BETTER. JUST STAY HYDRATED. [laughter] OKAY, LET’S TAKE YOU UP NORTH AND THE WEATHER IS A BIT DIFFERENT UP IN IQALUIT AND PAULINE IS STANDING BY. PAULINE, JUST PLACE YOURSELF FOR US — WHERE ARE YOU AND WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND YOU?>>Reporter: HI, ANDREW, WELCOME TO IQALUIT. IT’S 4° AND IT FEELS LIKE 2° SO IT’S BEEN CHILLY THIS MORNING AND THIS IS WHERE EVERYBODY WILL COME AFTER THE PARADE AND AFTER THE PANCAKE BREAKFAST THIS MORNING AND SO IT STARTED OFF WITH THE ARCTIC WINTER GAMES ARENA WHICH IS TOWARDS APEX IN AN AREA THAT WE CAN’T GET TO BECAUSE IT’S MORE REMOTE AND WE NEED TO KEEP THE SIGNAL UP. AND THEY STARTED A CONCERT AT THE BIG TOP TENT AND IT’S WITH THE ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL. THEY GET TOGETHER AND THEY HAVE OTHER COUNTRIES IN GREENLAND AND IN CULTURES AND THEY INVITE THEM HERE TO IQALUIT EVERY YEAR AND IT’S GEARING UP TO CANADA DAY. SO EVERYONE WILL CELEBRATE HERE AT THE BIG TOP TENT. AND PEOPLE WILL COME OUT AND THERE’S KIDS PLAYING BASKETBALL BEHIND ME AND THEY’RE GETTING READY AND THERE WILL BE FACE PAINT AND SO WE’RE WAITING FOR THE PARADE THAT WILL START AT NOON. (♪♪♪) IT SOUNDS GOOD AND WE’LL TRY TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOU IN IQALUIT AND THE PARADE COMING UP.>>Rosemary: YEAH AND PEOPLE HERE ARE STILL STREAMING IN BY THE DOZENS, THE HUNDREDS MAYBE, MAKING THEIR WAY — WE CAN SEE THEM — MAKING THEIR WAY TO PARLIAMENT HILL WHERE THE SHOW GETS UNDERWAY AT NOON. BUT WE HAVE ALREADY — LOOK AT THEM ALL, IT’S HARD TO GET A VANTAGE POINT FROM THIS PLACE BUT THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE THERE. AND WE THOUGH SPOKE TO SOME KIDS AT HOLY NAME CATHOLIC SCHOOL OUT AT THEIR FLAG POLE TO CELEBRATE CANADA DAY, AND HERE’S WHAT THEY DID FOR US. (♪♪♪) ♪ O CANADA ♪ ♪ OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND ♪ ♪ TRUE PATRIOT SON IN ALL OF US COMMAND ♪ ♪ FROM FAR AND WIDE ♪ ♪ O CANADA ♪ ♪ WE STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE ♪ ♪ GOD KEEP OUR LAND ♪ ♪ GLORIOUS AND FREE ♪ ♪ O CANADA ♪ ♪ WE STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE ♪ ♪ O CANADA ♪ ♪ WE STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE ♪ (♪♪♪) [Applause]>>LET’S GO, RAPTORS!>>Andrew: WE’LL HEAR BOTH, “O CANADA” AND “LET’S GO, RAPTORS.” SO I DON’T KNOW IF YOU CAUGHT THAT, IN THE ANTHEM AND THIS WAS QUITE THE SUBJECT, PARTICULARLY LAST YEAR WHEN THEY CHANGED THE OFFICIAL WORDS OF THE ANTHEM FROM “IN ALL OF THY SON’S COMMAND” TO “ALL OF US COMMAND “AND THEY SANG IT, AND SO IN THEIR DEFENCE WE KNOW THAT THE CHANGE HAPPENED BUT –>>Rosemary: IT TAKES A WHILE. AND, OF COURSE, THAT WAS A MOVE MADE BY THE FORMER M.P. BELANGER AND HE’S PASSED AWAY BUT IT’S HIS LEGACY TO HAVE MADE THIS. TO MAKE IT MORE NEUTRAL. AND I WAS SAYING TO YOU EARLIER BECAUSE I LEARNED THE VERSION BILINGUALLY, I DON’T KNOW THAT I KNOW THE WHOLE SONG IN ENGLISH OR FRENCH. NO, I THINK THAT I KNOW IT ONLY IN BOTH LANGUAGES AND I WAS LIKE THAT’S THE WORDS –>>Andrew: THAT’S THE VERSION THAT I LEARNED. IN SCHOOL — AND ACROSS COUNTRY. OKAY, SO IN OUR CONTINUING CAROUSEL OF REPORTERS THAT WE TOUCHED BASE WITH ACROSS THE COUNTRY, I BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE GREG ROSS STANDING BY. YOU’LL BE ROAMING AROUND THE G.T.A. AND, I DON’T KNOW, GREG, ANY RAPTOR SIGHTINGS WHERE YOU ARE?>>Reporter: NO PLAYERS, BUT LOTS OF FANS. EVERYBODY IS A RAPTORS FAN THESE DAYS. THEY MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE THE END OF THAT NATIONAL ANTHEM JUST HOW WE HEARD IT THERE, AND WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY. A BEAUTIFUL CANADA DAY CONDITIONS AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE ON THE WATER. AND WE’RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ON THE WATER AND THERE’S THE BEAUTIFUL TORONTO ISLANDS IN THE DISTANCE BEHIND ME AND WE’RE ON ONE OF THE MOST HISTORIC SHIPS IN CANADA. IT’S THE BLUENOSE II. WE HAVE THE CAPTAIN WITH US, BILL WATSON. YOU HAVE BEEN THE CAPTAIN FOR A LONG TIME?>>I HAVE BEEN THE CAPTAIN SINCE 2001 AND I STARTED IN 1987 AND I WORKED THROUGH THE RANKS TO BECOME CAPTAIN.>>Reporter: THAT MEANS FOR SIX MONTHS A YEAR HE LIVES ON BOARD THIS SHIP AND WE WERE JUST TALKING THAT THIS IS A BIG TALL SHIP BUT I IMAGINED THAT WHEN YOU’RE OUT ON THE WATER AND YOU HAVE 20 CREW MEMBERS AND IT GETS SMALL AFTER A WHILE?>>IT GETS VERY SMALL VERY QUICKLY. AND AS THE SUMMER GOES ON IT GETS SMALLER AND SMALLER AS WELL.>>Reporter: THEY LIVE IN PRETTY TIGHT QUARTERS BENEATH US HERE. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU’RE A CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP?>>THAT’S A PERK OF THE JOB IS LIVE TV AND A DOOR FOR MY CABIN.>>Reporter: WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY. SO FROM THE UNITED STATES AND WITHIN THE GREAT LAKES TO PROMOTE NOVA SCOTIA, TO TELL THE STORY OF THE SHIP. AND TO ASK PEOPLE TO COME AND VISIT IT.>>Reporter: A BEAUTIFUL STORY WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT. THE BLUENOSE II IS THE REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL BLUENOSE AND YOU KNOW THE HISTORY — TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY.>>SO THE ORIGINAL BLUENOSE WAS A FISHING SCHOONER THAT THEY RACED AND SOMETIMES IT WOULD BE FOUR YEARS BETWEEN RACES AND SHE WAS BEST CANADIAN AND AMERICAN AMERICAN AND SHE WENT INTO IT IN 1921 AND NEVER LOST THE TROPHY AFTER THAT.>>Reporter: AND THE DEMISE OF THE BLUENOSE HAPPENED A LONG TIME AGO?>>THAT WAS 1946 AND SHE WAS SOLD TO LUNENBURG AT THAT TIME AND TO THE CARIBBEAN FOR THE CARGO TRADE AND SHE WENT UP TO AN ISLAND IN 1946. IN 1933, SHE MADE THIS EXACT TRIP THAT WE’RE MAKING NOW UP THROUGH THE CANAL AND ALMOST TO CHICAGO. SHE ACTUALLY WENT TO CHICAGO AND I HAVE PICTURES OF HER IN 1933 WITH HER TOP LOWERED LIKE WE HAVE TO NOW. AND IT’S INTERESTING FROM AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE TO RECREATE THAT TRIP.>>Reporter: THAT TRIP IS HAPPENING AND, IN FACT, THEY’RE LEAVING HERE IN TORONTO AND GO THROUGH THE CANAL TOMORROW, ALL OF THESE TALL SHIPS. SO IF YOU LIVE IN THE ST. CATHARINES AREA, WHAT A GREAT TIME TO BE BY THE LOCKES AS THESE SHIPS MAKE THEIR WAY THROUGH THERE. AND WE’LL HEAD TO ANOTHER SHIP AND THERE’S MANY SHIPS ON BOARD HERE SO WE’LL DO A BIT OF A WALK HERE AND WE’LL SHOW YOU WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THIS FESTIVAL AS WE MAKE OUR WAY OFF THE SHIP. NOW THIS IS ALL HAPPENING LIVE SO WE’RE MAKING OUR WAY THROUGH THE CROWD HERE. AND WE HEAD OFF THE BLUENOSE II AND YOU CAN SEE THAT IT’S STARTING TO FILL UP. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE AROUND HERE FOR THIS BIG CANADA DAY FESTIVAL. AND, I MEAN, THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE RIGHT NOW. AND YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ONLY GETTING PICTURES OF THESE TALL SHIPS. I MEAN, IT’S AN EXCITING TIME DOWN HERE ON THE TORONTO WATERFRONT AND IT’S CANADA DAY AND IT’S A HOLIDAY. AND THE WEATHER IS BEAUTIFUL. AND WE’VE GOT PEOPLE JUST HANGING OUT. THIS GUY HAS “I LOVE NEW YORK” YOU’RE IN TORONTO RIGHT NOW.>>I AM IN TORONTO AND WE’RE PROMOTING TOURISM TO THE STATE OF NEW YORK.>>Reporter: WHAT ABOUT PROMOTING TOURISM TO THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO –>>I LOVE TORONTO. I AM ENJOYING IT. I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH JUST DOING DIFFERENT FESTIVALS AND TALKING ABOUT WHAT WE HAVE.>>Reporter: WE ARE LOVING IT HERE. PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE HERE AND FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, OBVIOUSLY. AND WE SEE PEOPLE WITH THEIR CANADA DAY HATS AND T-SHIRTS. A LOT OF PEOPLE WEARING THEIR RAPTORS GEAR AS WELL AND WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT THE RAPTORS. A YOUNG MAN WEARING HIS RAPTORS, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?>>CANADA.>>Reporter: WE’RE ALL FROM CANADA. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?>>TORONTO.>>Reporter: LET’S SHOW EVERYBODY YOUR RAPTORS GEAR. AND YOU SEE THIS AROUND TORONTO. ARE YOU A BIG FAN? WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST PLAYER?>>KAWHI.>>Reporter: KAWHI LEONARD IS A FREE AGENT AND WE’LL HAVE TO SEE IF HE COMES BACK TO TORONTO. HE’LL MEET WITH SOME OTHER TEAMS AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT. LUST LET’S GET BACK TO THE TALL SHIPS. WE’LL HEAD ON TO THIS ONE RIGHT HERE WHICH IS THE PICKTON CASTLE. A REAL INTERESTING SHIP. AND WE’LL MEET UP WITH ONE OF THE CREW MEMBERS HERE AS WE MAKE OUR WAY ON BOARD. THIS IS A LITTLE BIT OF A TOUGHER ONE. SO FORGIVE OUR CAMERAMAN HERE, JOE, AS HE MAKES HIS WAY UP ON TO THIS SHIP. AGAIN, THERE ARE PEOPLE TOURING THIS SHIP AND WE’RE ON LIVE TELEVISION HERE, PEOPLE ARE GETTING AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME AROUND.>>HELLO.>>Reporter: THIS IS MAGGIE. WHAT DO YOU DO HERE?>>I’M THE CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER FOR THE COMPANY THAT OWNS AND OPERATES THE SHIP.>>Reporter: WHO IS THIS LOVELY KIT ?E.>>THIS IS FIJI, SHE’S A CREW MEMBER AND SHE LIVES ON BOARD AND SHE’S FROM FIJI ORIGINALLY.>>Reporter: YOU GUYS ADOPTED HER FROM FIJI?>>WE HAVE ADOPTED HER FROM FIJI.>>Reporter: SHE SAILS AROUND ON THE SHIP, ON BOARD ALL THE TIME?>>SHE’S AN AWESOME SHIP PET AND SHE’S REALLY GOOD AT RODENT CONTROL AND MAKING SURE THAT ALL OF THE MICE AND THE RATS GET CAUGHT. NOT SO GOOD ON TV INTERVIEWS BUT THAT’S OKAY.>>Reporter: INCREDIBLE. IF YOU’RE AROUND THE TALL SHIPS YOU CAN SEE FIJI WANDERING AROUND THE GROUNDS AND HANGING OUT AND HAVING FUN. REAL QUICK, WE’LL SAY THAT THIS SHIP HAS THE — THE PICKTON CASTLE HAS AN INTERESTING NAME AND WE DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TIME BUT TELL US ABOUT THE NAME.>>SO PICKTON CASTLE WAS NAMED FOR OUR CASTLE IN WALES, BUILT IN 1928 AS ONE OF SIX SISTER SHIPS AND THEY WERE ALL NAMED AFTER CASTLES IN THE U.K. SO WE RETURNED HER ORIGINAL NAME TO HER.>>Reporter: YOU BELIEVE THIS IS THE ONLY CASTLE SHIP ON THE WATER RIGHT NOW SO THAT’S INTERESTING. AND THESE TALL SHIPS WILL HEAD THROUGH THE WELLAN CANAL TOMORROW AND WHAT AN INTERESTING SIGHT THAT WILL BE IF YOU LIVE IN THAT AREA. SO WE’LL SEND IT BACK TO YOU GUYS IN THE STUDIO.>>Andrew: GREG, IF THAT DOESN’T GIVE FOLKS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHAT IT’S LIKE THERE IN THAT PART OF THE G.T.A., I DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL. AND THAT WAS EXCELLENT, THANK YOU SO MUCH. AND, OF COURSE, WE’LL TOUCH BASE WITH GREG OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROGRAMME. AND THERE WE SEE THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, JULIE PAYETTE IS LEADING THE CREW.>>Rosemary: YEAH ON A KAYAK WHICH IS AN INCREDIBLE SIGHT. AND SHE’S KAYAKING ABOUT A KILOMETRE ALONG THE RIDEAU CANAL THERE. AND HER OFFICE SAYS THAT SHE’S ACTUALLY A BIG KAYAKING ENTHUSIAST AND WE KNOW THAT SHE’S A FAN OF FITNESS AND GETTING OUTDOORS AND THAT’S PART OF WHAT SHE TRIES TO SEND AS A MESSAGE TO OTHER CANADIANS. SHE APPARENTLY PATROLLED THE BEACHES BY KAYAK IN THE 1980s AND SHE’S GOT SOME PROFESSIONAL AND RECREATIONAL PADDLERS FROM IN AND AROUND OTTAWA. AND A RETIRED MASTER CORPORAL WHO LOST BOTH OF HIS LEGS WHEN HE WAS DEPLOYED IN AFGHANISTAN AND HE’S NOW ON THE MASTER PARA-CANOE TEAM. SO THIS IS THE MOST UNUSUAL GOVERNOR-GENERAL ARRIVAL I HAVE SEEN TO DATE.>>Andrew: WHETHER YOU CONSIDER THIS KAYAK TRIP AND IT’S NOT UNUSUAL FOR HER, AND YOU CONSIDER THE BIKE TRIP LAST YEAR ON CANADA DAY AS WELL AS SHE MADE HER WAY TO PARLIAMENT HILL, BUT THIS IS SOMEONE WHO IS A FIERCE PROPONENT OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND GETTING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. AND AS AN ASTRONAUT THAT’S PART AND PARCEL WITH THE TERRITORY AND YOU HAVE TO BE INCREDIBLY FIT TO BLAST OFF TO THE STARS.>>Rosemary: I WOULDN’T DO THAT BECAUSE IT WOULD BE RISKY. –>>Andrew: I DON’T MIND THAT FOR A SECOND. SO THERE SHE IS WAVING TO THE CROWD. SO WE’LL TAKE JUST A SLIGHT BREAK HERE BUT WE’LL BE BACK BECAUSE THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL WILL ARRIVE ON PARLIAMENT HILL AND WE’LL ALSO SEE AND HEAR FROM THE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS FAMILY AND, OF COURSE, THERE’S THE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES, THE MEMBERS OF THE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY, ALL AROUND REMARKABLE PEOPLE AND, HEY, JUST REGULAR PEOPLE LIKE ROSIE AND I WILL TRY TO KEEP YOU COMPANY TOO. BACK IN A MOMENT.>>I THINK THAT CANADA IS SPECIAL BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT PEOPLE THAT LIVE HERE.>>IT’S A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND THERE’S GREAT PEOPLE HERE, AND IT’S NOT THAT MUCH THAT IS LIKE TORNADOES AND STUFF LIKE THAT. SO WE’RE KIND OF SAFE HERE.>>ON CANADA DAY I’LL SPEND TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND BAKE A CAKE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I USUALLY DECORATE IT WITH THE CANADIAN COLOURS, THE REDS AND THE WHITES.>>I AM REALLY PROUD TO BE CANADIAN. (♪♪♪) ■, (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪)>>Andrew: WELCOME BACK TO OUR LIVE BROADCAST FROM THE FRONT LAWN OF PARLIAMENT HILL. I AM ANDREW CHANG. WE HAVE ROSEMARY BARTON HERE WITH ME. AND WE ARE WATCHING THE THOUSANDS STRIEMING ON THE HILL BECAUSE WE’RE 28 MINUTES AWAY FROM THE BIG SHOW STARTING AND WE HAVE THOUSANDS STREAMING IN AND NOWHERE NEAR CAPACITY.>>Rosemary: THEY TELL US ABOUT 7,000, THAT’S IN THE LAST COUPLE MINUTES. BUT BECAUSE OF SECURITY YOU HAVE TO GO FAIRLY DOWN WELLINGTON WHICH IS THE STREET THAT RUNS IN FRONT OF PARLIAMENT HILL AND LINE UP AT THE SUPREME COURT FRONT LAWN. BUT IT’S MOVING QUICKLY. IF YOU ARE THINKING TO COME, AND YOU ARE IN OTTAWA, I DON’T THINK THAT YOU’LL HAVE TROUBLE GETTING HERE.>>Andrew: THERE’S NOT REALLY ANY WAIT AND THE LAWN IS FILLING UP BUT THERE’S STILL SPACE BEHIND US. WE HAVE A REASONABLE VANTAGE POINT. AND THERE’S STILL ROOM FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. AND ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW WHAT — I LIKE THAT. SO JUST A FEW MOMENTS AGO WE SAW THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL MAKING HER WAY BY KAYAK TO PARLIAMENT HILL. SO THINGS ARE GETTING UNDERWAY AND THE P.M. AND HIS FAMILY WILL ARRIVE AND THOSE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES WILL GET STARTED AND THE SNOWBIRDS TOO. BUT FIRST TO TASHAUNA REID WHO IS STANDING BY NEAR THE STAGE. TASHAUNA, WHAT DO YOU GOT FOR US?>>Reporter: I’M HERE WITH THE OPENING SONG PERFORMER. YOU WILL PERFORM “HOPE,” WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT SONG?>>>>IT’S JUST AN AMAZING SONG THAT REALLY CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF CANADA DAY. AND IT’S A PERFECT FIT AND THE WAY THAT IT’S ARRANGE SIDE EXCITING AND SO I’M STOKED TO PLAY IT FOR EVERYBODY.>>Reporter: LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT ARRANGEMENT AND YOU’LL PERFORM WITH, OF COURSE, THE NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE ORCHESTRA AND MARIE WILL JOIN AND YOU IT’S YOUR FIRST CANADA DAY ON THE HILL. HOW ARE YOU FEELING AHEAD OF THE PERFORMANCE?>>I’M REALLY EXCITED AND I FEEL THAT IT’S AN EARLY MORNING FOR ME. I’M NOT A MORNING PERSON. SO I’M STILL WAKING UP AND REALIZING IT’S NOT A DREAM. LIKE, WE’RE HERE AND IT’S HAPPENING AND IT’S JUST GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN AND I’M SO HAPPY TO BE HERE.>>Reporter: YOU ARE REPRESENTING HALIFAX TODAY IN THE BIG LINEUP. BUT BEING YOUR FIRST TIME ON THE HILL AND PERFORMING FOR CANADA, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST?>>I THINK THAT I’M MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO JUST SEEING EVERYBODY ROCKING OUT AND SEEING EVERYBODY IN THE CROWD AND JUST FEELING THE LOVE FOR OUR COUNTRY AND FEELING SO HAPPY AND GRATEFUL TO BE HERE.>>Reporter: SO I HAVE TO ASK YOU WHAT IS THE CANADIAN SONG THAT REALLY RINGS TRUE TO YOU AND MAKES YOU PROUD TO BE CANADIAN. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE?>>GOT TO BE “SKATER BOY” BY AVRIL LAVIGNE.>>Reporter: WE’LL LET YOU GET TO IT AND WE KNOW THAT YOU WILL HIT THE STAGE SOON BUT STAY TUNED, A LOT MORE TO COME.>>Andrew: THANK YOU SO MUCH, TASHAUNA.>>Rosemary: THAT’S A HARD QUESTION AND I WAS GOING TO ASK YOU BUT I DON’T THINK THAT I CAN ANSWER.>>Andrew: WHY DO YOU HAVE –>>Rosemary: LET’S THINK ABOUT IT AND COME BACK. OKAY, SALIMAH SHIVJI HAS A SPECIAL GUEST, ONE OF THE V.I.P.s STARTING TO ARRIVE HERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL. SALIMAH?>>Reporter: WE DO AND I’M HERE WITH THE HERITAGE MINISTER WHO IS JUST CHATTING TO ME ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE, WEREN’T YOU?>>IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. AND WE WANTED SUN AND WE GOT IT.>>Reporter: WE DID. AND LAST YEAR IT WAS SWELTERING HEAT AND THE YEAR BEFORE THERE WERE SECURITY LINES AND IT WAS DIFFICULT. HOW DID ALL OF THOSE EXPERIENCES FACTOR IN FOR THIS YEAR?>>WE TOOK ALL OF THAT INTO CONSIDERATION AND IT WAS A BIT COMPLICATED TWO YEARS AGO. WE HIRED A SPECIALIST AND WE HAVE MORE VOLUNTEERS AND BETTER SIGNING, I GUESS, SO FROM WHAT I HEAR EVERYTHING IS GOING GREAT AND PEOPLE ARE FLOWING EASILY AND IT’S TAKING NO TIME.>>Reporter: ABSOLUTELY AND 7,000 PEOPLE ALREADY ON THE HILL.>>MAYBE MORE THAN THAT.>>Reporter: I WANTED TO ASK YOU, EVERY BIRTHDAY IS SPECIAL, AND IT’S THE 152nd BIRTHDAY BUT IN BETWEEN YEARS HOW MUCH HARDER IS IT TO PLAN A SHOW LIKE THIS WHEN IT’S NOT A BIG ANNIVERSARY?>>I DON’T THINK THAT IT IS DIFFICULT. WE START THE DAY AFTER — LIKE TOMORROW WE’LL WORK ON CANADA DAY 2020. THE THING IS THAT EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE PART OF THIS SHOW. AND I WAS TALKING TO BRETT KISS I AND THE STRUMBELLAS AND I’M LIKE, THANK YOU FOR INVITING US, IT’S A PRIVILEGE, RIGHT? SO WE’RE NOT RUNNING AFTER ARTISTS AND THEY’RE DIFFICULT TO GET. THEY’RE EASY TO GET BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE PART OF THE CELEBRATIONS AND WE’RE SO HAPPY TO HAVE THEM.>>Reporter: WHAT A CELEBRATION IT IS. AND THIS IS YOUR FIRST CANADA DAY EVENT AS HERITAGE MINISTER. AND I HEARD THAT YOU’RE PRACTISING PRETTY HARD FOR A SPECIAL APPEARANCE PERHAPS. YOU WANT TO TELL US ABOUT THAT?>>IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE A SECRET.>>Reporter: DID I BLOW THE SECRET? IS THERE A SECRET?>>I’LL PLAY GUITAR WITH THE TONNE OF PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS, NO PRESSURE.>>Reporter: NO PRESSURE, YOU’LL BE FINE.>>NO PRESSURE, WE’LL SEE.>>Reporter: YOU SEEM TO NOT BE WORRIED ABOUT IT.>>I LOVE PLAYING GUITAR AND IT’S A PLEDGE TO PLAY WITH THESE PEOPLE AND THEY’RE AMAZING AND I’M NOT BUT I’LL TRY TO DO MY BEST.>>Reporter: THAT SOUNDS EXCELLENT. AND ENJOY THE FESTIVITIES.>>THANK YOU SO MUCH AND HAPPY CANADA DAY.>>Reporter: THERE YOU GO, SO CATCH THE EVENING SHOW AND CHECK OUT THE GUITAR AT THE END OF THAT.>>Rosemary: IT’S AN ELECTION YEAR SO HE MAY WANT TO RETHINK THAT IF IT DOESN’T GO WELL, BUT THANK YOU, SALIMAH.>>Andrew: I ALSO HAVE A SECRET. AND YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THE TROMBONE UNDER THE TABLE.>>Rosemary: IT WOULDN’T SURPRISE ME AT ALL AND I WOULD SIT HERE STAR-STRUCK IF YOU DID THAT.>>Andrew: I WON’T EMBARRASS YOU, AND I WILL EMBARRASS MYSELF IN OTHER WAYS BUT THAT WON’T BE ONE WAY. AND WE’LL GO TO CALGARY AND ERIN COLLINS IS STANDING BY. CAN YOU TELL US HOW THINGS ARE SHAPING UP WHERE YOU ARE?>>Reporter: IT’S EARLY BUT THINGS ARE GETTING GOING AND WE’RE HERE ON TREATY 7 TERRITORY IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND I’M HERE WITH SANDRA MANYFEATHERS WHO IS GOING TO TRY TO TEACH A BIT ABOUT BLACKFOOT CULTURE HERE TODAY AND THE BOW VALLEY COLLEGE INDIGENOUS SHOWCASE AND POWWOW. WHY IS TODAY IMPORTANT TO YOU?>>I HEARD YOU SAY THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO THE TREATY 7 TERRITORY. SPECIFICALLY THIS IS BLACKFOOT TERRITORY. AND IT’S REALLY AN EXCITING DAY FOR MYSELF BECAUSE I’M A BLACKFOOT PERSON AND I HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TEACH THE WAYS OF THE BLACKFOOT PEOPLE HERE TODAY.>>Reporter: AND YOU BROUGHT A BUNCH OF THINGS WITH YOU AND I KNOW THAT YOU’LL DO DRUMMING LATER AND THERE’S REGALIA HERE. FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF REGALIA AND WHAT THESE ITEMS MIGHT BE, LET’S WALK THROUGH A COUPLE. WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR HAND?>>I HAVE EAGLE PLUMES IN MY HAND AND IT’S CONNECTED TO THIS.>>Reporter: WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EAGLE FEATHERS?>>WELL, THE EAGLE FEATHERS WERE GIFTED TO ME BY AN ELDER WHO TRANSFERRED THEM TO ME AND ALLOWED ME TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO WEAR THEM. SO THIS IS A GIFT FROM AN ELDER.>>Reporter: AND YOU MENTIONED EARLIER THAT GETTING SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS LIKE GETTING A DEGREE OR A DIPLOMA?>>IT IS. AND IT’S GOT A LOT OF SIGNIFICANCE TO IT, AND SO WHEN I WEAR THE EAGLE FEATHERS IT’S A REMINDER TO ME THAT AN ELDER HAS TRUSTED ME AND HAS BESTOWED UPON ME A GREAT GIFT THAT HE’S TRANSFERRING TO ME A GREAT GIFT.>>Reporter: WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE HERE?>>I DO HAVE A SHAWL AND THIS SHAWL REPRESENTS MY –>>Reporter: IT’S BEAUTIFUL.>>MY FAMILY STORIES. SO HERE’S IMAGES THAT REPRESENT MY FATHER. HE WAS THE FIRE KEEPER. AND THE BUNDLE. AND THIS REPRESENTS MY FOUR CHILDREN. SO WHEN I WEAR THIS SHAWL I REALLY, LIKE, I THINK ABOUT MY FAMILY AS I DANCE WITH THE SHAWL. SO THAT’S WHAT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS SHAWL IS TO ME.>>Reporter: THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PLACE AS WELL IN BLACKFOOT CULTURE. WHY IS THIS A CONFLUENCE OF THE BOW AND THE ELBOW RIVER, WHAT IS THE HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF THIS SPOT SOME.>>WELL, IF WE GO A COUPLE HUNDRED KILOMETRE IT’S — SORRY, ABOUT A HUNDRED KILOMETRES TO THE EAST — THAT’S WHERE TREATY 7 WAS MADE IN 1877. AND I DO SAY “MADE” BECAUSE MY ANCESTORS WERE — LIKE THEY DIDN’T SPEAK AND WRITE IN ENGLISH, SO IT WAS A TREATY THAT WAS MADE AT BLACKFOOT CROSSING. AND THE BOW RIVER IS –>>Reporter: RIGHT HERE. AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT YOU’LL BE DOING AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT YOU DO AT THE UNIVERSITY, THESE PEOPLE SPEAK YOUR BLACKFOOT LANGUAGE. AND THIS WILL BE RISKY FOR ME BUT IS THERE A WAY TO SAY “HAPPY CANADA DAY” IN BLACKFOOT. MAYBE YOU CAN TEACH ME.>>WELL, I WOULD SAY SOMETHING CLOSE TO THAT WOULD BE “[SPEAKING IN BLACKFOOT LANGUAGE]>>Reporter: [SPEAKING IN BLACKFOOT LANGUAGE] WE SHOULD TRY IT ONE MORE TIME.>>[SPEAKING IN BLACKFOOT LANGUAGE]>>Reporter: HOW DID I DO?>>YOU DID GOOD FOR YOUR FIRST TRY. IF I HAD YOU AS A STUDENT A BIT LONGER WE MIGHT GET BETTER.>>Reporter: WE’LL HAVE ALL DAY TO WORK ON IT SO WE’LL KEEP GOING. AND THAT’S ALL FROM HERE FOR RIGHT NOW.>>Andrew: ERIN, CAN YOU ASK YOUR CAMERA PERSON TO SHOW THE CRAFTSMANSHIP DOWN THERE?>>Reporter: ABSOLUTELY. LOOK AT THIS BELT, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS, SANDRA? YOU WANT TO SEE A BIT MORE, DAVE. WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS?>>OKAY SO THE BACKFOOT PEOPLE ARE REALLY CONNECTED TO THE BUFFALO AND THE BUFFALO REPRESENTS OUR WAY OF LIFE. SO FOOD, SHELTER, CLOTHING. AND THEN, OF COURSE, THE MEDICINE WILL REPRESENT THE MANY DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THE FOUR DIRECTIONS, THE FOUR COLOURS OF MAN, AND IT’S KIND OF A CONTEMPORARY IMAGE FOR THE BLACKFOOT PEOPLE BUT THIS IS LIKE THE MOUNTAIN DESIGN HERE AND SO THIS IS — WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT — AN ITEM LIKE THIS, YOU CAN TELL — WELL, I COULD TELL THAT IT’S A BLACKFOOT DESIGN. SO EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE HERE IS MADE FOR BLACKFOOT.>>Reporter: WILL YOU PUT THIS ON LATER AS YOU DOCTORRUM AND DANCE?>>YES.>>Reporter: ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR DANCES THAT YOU’LL DO TODAY?>>I DO THE DANCE CALLED THE FANCY SHAWL. SO THIS IS THE DRESS THAT I’LL WEAR AND THIS IS THE — THIS GOES OVER THE DRESS AM.>>Reporter: IT’S BEAUTIFUL AND YOU BEADED THIS YOURSELF?>>YES.>>Reporter: VERY, VERY IMPRESSIVE I DON’T THINK THAT YOU COULD TEACH ME TO DO THAT.>>MAYBE IN ABOUT A YEAR I COULD DO THAT.>>Reporter: LET’S WORK ON IT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THE.>>YOU’RE WELCOME.>>Andrew: THANK YOU SO MUCH, ERIN. AND SO AS WE CAN SEE NOW THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL HAS MADE HER WAY OUT OF KAYAK AND THE FOLKS MAY HAVE HEARD SOME OF THE BOOMS IN THE BACKGROUND, THAT’S THE 21-GUN SALUTE. THAT’S SALUTING THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL AS SHE ARRIVES.>>Rosemary: AND IN TRIBUTE TO THE FALLEN SOLDIERS AND THE VETERANS, THAT’S WHAT THE 21-GUN SALUTE IS. AND SHE’S COMING UP FROM THE CANAL AND UP ALONGSIDE THE NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL WHERE I THINK THAT SHE’S GOING TO STOP AT THE TOMB OF UNKNOWN SOLDIER. AND THEN YOU SEE THE POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE, THE CEREMONIAL PART OF CANADA DAY.>>Andrew: AND THE FOLKS FIRING THE GUNS RIGHT NOW — IT IS INTERESTING WHEN YOU THINK OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 21-GUN SALUTE. SO THIS STEMS FROM AN OLD NAVAL TRADITION — [GUN SALUTE] SO WHAT WILL WE SEE HERE SOME BECAUSE THERE’S SOME EARLIER CONFUSION ON WHICH FORMATION TO SEE, THE CANADA BURST OR THE MAPLE SPLIT. THESE ARE THE ACTUAL NAMES OF THE –>>Rosemary: THEY ARE. AND YOU HEARD THE INTERVIEW WITH THE CAPTAIN, THE MAPLE FLIP THAT WE WILL SEE COME UP OVER THE PEACE TOWER AFTER THIS PART OF THE CEREMONY. [GUN SALUTE]>>Andrew: SO THE 21-GUN SALUTE IS — AT SOME POINT I’LL EXPLAIN BUT HERE’S THE VICE-REGAL SALUTE AS IT WAS ANNOUNCED. (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪)>>[indiscernible] [GUN SALUTE] [Cheers and Applause]>>Rosemary: THAT WAS PRETTY COOL, RIGHT?>>Andrew: THAT WAS COOL. SO THE SNOWBIRDS, THAT WAS THEIR FIRST FLY-PAST AND THEY’LL DO ANOTHER AFTER THE SINGING OF THE ANTHEM. IT’S JUST AFTERNOON SO IN PROBABLY LESS THAN HALF AN HOUR’S TIME. BUT YOU HEARD THE VICE-REGAL SALUTE THAT JULIE PAYETTE, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, WOULD HAVE HEARD MANY TIMES BEFORE. YOU MIGHT HAVE NOTICED THE MASH-UP OF THE BRITISH NATIONAL ANTHEM AND THE CANADIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM AND “GOD SAVE THE QUEEN” AND THE BEGINNING OF “O CANADA” AND THE END OF “O CANADA.” (♪♪♪)>>Rosemary: AND THIS INSPECTION OF THE GUARD ACTUALLY OFTEN HAPPENS HERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL. THEY’RE DOING IT A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTEE THIS YEAR. AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER. THEN SHE’LL WALK UP BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T TAKE A CAR ANYWHERE, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.>>Andrew: HOW HOT DO YOU THINK THAT IT IS INSIDE OF THOSE HATS?>>Rosemary: WELL, THEY DO SOMETIMES PASS OUT. THEY ARE QUITE HEAVY, RIGHT. IT’S AN ORDEAL TO PUT THAT ON TODAY.>>Andrew: BUT THIS IS, YEAH, ONE OF THE MANY DUTIES THAT THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL WILL ATTEND TO AND AS IS OFTEN THE CASE WE’LL SEE HER AS SHE WALKS BY AND SHE’LL SPEAK WITH SOME OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GUARD OF HONOUR AS SHE GOES BY.>>Rosemary: THEN SHE’LL MAKE HER WAY TO THE STAGE AND SHE’LL GIVE A SPEECH ALONG WITH THE PRIME MINISTER AND AS YOU MAY KNOW WHEN SHE GETS UP HERE THAT THE FLAG ON THE PEACE TOWER HAS TO CHANGE. AND IT INDICATES THAT SHE IS THERE ON PARLIAMENT HILL. SO THIS IS HAPPENING AND IT’S MAYBE A FIVE-MINUTE WALK DOWN PARLIAMENT HILL TO WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE STILL GATHERING ON THE STREET THERE IS SO I IMAGINE THEY TOO WILL MAKE THEIR WAY UP ON TO THE LAWN AT SOME POINT. ALTHOUGH A LOT OF PEOPLE JUST STAY ON THE STREET, FRANKLY, AND HAVE A GOOD TIME AND BUY LEMONADE AND HOTDOGS AND YOU CAN HEAR THEM FROM HERE.>>Andrew: YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE ACTION BUT HEAR A LOT OF THE ACTION AS WELL FROM STREET LEVEL AND YOU DON’T NECESSARILY NEED TO BE ON THE FRONT LAWN, ALTHOUGH THE LAWN IS PROBABLY THE BEST VANTAGE POINT.>>Rosemary: AND THEY HAVE BIG SCREENS SET UP IN CASE YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE YOUR WAY UP HERE. AND THE PRIME MINISTER HAS ISSUED MESSAGES TO CANADIANS EARLY IN THE MORNING, REMINDING CANADIANS THAT WE ARE ALL CONNECTED AND THAT WE SHARE VALUES AND CULTURES AND INTERESTS AND THAT WE ARE FORTUNATE ENOUGH AS WE’RE TIED TOGETHER BY A DIVERSE AND BOUNTIFUL COUNTRY. WE’LL PROBABLY HEAR MORE OF THAT KIND OF LANGUAGE AS PEOPLE ARRIVE AND THE PRIME MINISTER AS WELL AND HIS FAMILY. FOR HIS FOURTH CANADA DAY. THIS IS ACTUALLY JULIE PAYETTE’S SECOND AND THIS IS THE PRIME MINISTER’S FOURTH IN THAT OFFICIAL ROLE, THAT’S RIGHT. AND OF COURSE THERE’S AN ELECTION SO MAYBE HE’LL GET ANOTHER CANADA DAY, WE’LL SEE.>>Andrew: AND, YEAH, I MEAN, YOU MADE AN IMPORTANT POINT ABOUT THE MESSAGING HERE BECAUSE SUCH IS ONE OF THE GREAT CHALLENGES OF THIS ROLE AS GOVERNOR-GENERAL AND THAT’S TO FIGURE OUT, A, WHAT SORT OF A MESSAGE YOU DO WANT TO COMMUNICATE TO CANADIANS AND THEN HOW TO CRAFT THAT MESSAGE, RIGHT, AND WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT POINTS THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO CONVEY, ESPECIALLY ON A SPECIAL OCCASION SUCH AS THIS. AND SO AS WE HEARD, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE MAJOR THEMES THAT JULIE PAYETTE WANTS TO BRING FORWARD TODAY, THEMES AROUND MULTICULTURALISM AND AROUND DIVERSITY AND AROUND INCLUSION AND REALLY THE WHOLE PROGRAMME THAT YOU HEAR — ACTUALLY LET’S LISTEN IN –>>[indiscernible] PRESENT ARMS. (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪) [Applause]>>[indiscernible]>>Andrew: SO THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL WILL SAY HELLO TO THE FOLKS WHO HAVE SHOWN UP TO GREET AN ASTRONAUT, SUCH AS SHE IS, WHICH IS A COOL THING TO DO, GOVERNOR-GENERAL OR NOT.>>Rosemary: YEAH. SHE ALSO SPEAKS SEVERAL LANGUAGES, SHE’S –>>Andrew: SHE SPEAKS SIX LANGUAGES. AND INTERESTINGLY — SO AT — AND YOU WILL REMEMBER THIS — AT THE LAST CANADA DAY FESTIVITIES LAST YEAR WHEN SHE MADE HER ADDRESS ON STAGE SHE SAID A FEW WORDS IN ALGONQUIN AS WELL. SO WE MAY SEE A REPEAT TODAY. BUT SHE’LL MAKE HER WAY THROUGH AND SHE’LL GREET THE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS FAMILY. AND ALSO THEIR CHILDREN.>>Rosemary: LOOK AT THAT. THAT IS CANADIAN ROYALTY ALSO. RYAN REYNOLDS.>>Andrew: HELLO, SIR! [laughter]>>Rosemary: “DEAD POOL,” MAKE YOUR WAY OVER HERE, PLEASE.>>Andrew: YOU THINK THAT YOU’D HEAR MORE SCREAMING.>>Rosemary: I DON’T THINK THAT PEOPLE KNEW WHO IT WAS. IT WAS VERY BRIEF. SO WE DID HAVE A HEADS UP THAT RYAN REYNOLDS AND I THINK THAT HIS WIFE BLAKE LIVELY WOULD SHOW UP TODAY, ALTHOUGH I DIDN’T SEE HER THERE SO THAT MIGHT BE WRONG.>>Andrew: AND THERE’S A HINT THAT WENT OUT ON TWITTER, RIGHT?>>Rosemary: I’M TRYING TO PULL IT UP NOW. HE TWEETED. BUT IT’S A BIT SURPRISING. SO, OF COURSE, HE’S A FAMOUS CANADIAN, VERY FAMOUS CANADIAN.>>Andrew: A LITTLE FAMOUS.>>Rosemary: HE WROTE THREE HOURS AGO “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY 152nd-YEAR-OLD LOVER, CANADA.” AND HE IS SORT OF FRIENDLY WITH THE PRIME MINISTER, I THINK THAT IS FAIR TO SAY. THEY HUNG OUT A BIT AT THE STATE DINNER WHEN CANADA WAS INVITED DOWN THERE UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA AND THEY HAVE BEEN FRIENDLY EVER SINCE.>>Andrew: HE’LL HAVE MADE A SHORT TRIP FROM BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, WHERE HE’S WORKING RIGHT NOW AND HE’S FILMING — FILMING A MOVIE. THERE’S THE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS FAMILY AND ALL THREE KIDS ARE HERE?>>Rosemary: ALL THREE. SO XAVIER IS THE OLDEST AND ELLA-GRACE AND HAYDREN WHO I LIKE TO CALL THE HAM OF THE FAMILY, I DON’T THINK THAT THE PRIME MINISTER WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT AND SOPHIE GRÉGOIRE, HIS WIFE THERE. SO USUALLY — SO THIS IS ALL A BIT DIFFERENT. THEY USUALLY ARRIVE AT THE FRONT AND GET DROPPED OFF BUT THIS YEAR THEY’RE ARRIVING BEHIND STAGE AND COMING DOWN THE RED CARPET WHERE THEY WILL STOP TO GREET THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.>>Andrew: JUST TO SITUATE FOLKS — WHAT YOU ARE SEEING HERE IS THE RED CARPET RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE WEST LAWN AND YOU HAVE THE EAST LAWN AND YOU CAN SEE THE PRIME MINISTER IS MAKING HIS WAY TOWARDS THE STREET TO SEE ALL OF THE FOLKS WHO TURNED OUT TO SEE THEM. AND MAKING THEIR WAY ESSENTIALLY IN THE WAY OF THE CENTENNIAL.>>Rosemary: HE’S ALREADY BEEN OUT THIS MORNING WITH XAVIER, HIS ELDEST THERE, AT A LOCAL RIDING, CELEBRATING A BIT EARLIER CANADA DAY. AND HE WILL AT SOME POINT AS WELL TALK TO — STOP AND TALK TO OUR FRIENDS AT RADIO-CANADA AND TO SALIMAH SHIVJI TO FIND OUT HOW ELSE THEY’RE GOING TO CELEBRATE.>>Andrew: AND THIS SURELY WILL BE — IT WILL BE SOMETHING OF A TREAT FOR THE PRIME MINISTER BECAUSE LAST YEAR HE ACTUALLY WASN’T EVEN ABLE TO BE HERE PHYSICALLY ON PARLIAMENT HILL FOR CANADA DAY. YOU WILL RECALL, ROSEIE, IT WAS THE HEIGHT OF THE TARIFF DISPUTE WITH THE UNITED STATES AND I BELIEVE THAT HE WAS IN LEAMINGTON, ONTARIO AND ALSO MAKING HIS WAY TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. AND HE WAS ALSO IN DAWSON CITY IN YUKON ON CANADA DAY, BUT NOT IN CANADA. SO HIS WIFE AND TWO OUT OF HIS THREE KIDS WERE HERE LAST YEAR BUT TODAY HE GETS TO CELEBRATE.>>Rosemary: THAT’S GOOD BECAUSE IT’S RIGHT BEFORE AN ELECTION. AND IT’S UNUSUAL TOO THAT THE PRIME MINISTER WOULDN’T BE HERE ON CANADA DAY SO THERE WAS A BIT OF TALK AROUND THAT. BUT IT WAS A MESSAGE THAT THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE GOVERNMENT WAS TRYING TO REFLECT TO THE IMPORTANCE OF PEOPLE DOING THIS KIND OF WORK AND FEELING THE IMPACT OF THESE — OF TARIFFS. OF COURSE, THAT’S ALL MOVED FORWARD. THERE IS A NAFTA AGREEMENT THAT HASN’T BEEN RATIFIED. I WON’T GO DOWN THAT RABBIT HOLE RIGHT NOW. BUT THEY ARE HOPING THAT AT SOME POINT THIS SUMMER THAT PARLIAMENT COULD BE RECALLED TO VOTE ON NAFTA. IT PROVIDED THE U.S. CONGRESS — IT’S PROVIDED THAT THE U.S. CONGRESS GETS ITS ACT TOGETHER. SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT JUSTIN TRUDEAU IS PROBABLY THINKING OF ACTUALLY ON THIS CANADA DAY AS PART OF — FRANKLY, THE LEGACY OF HIS FIRST MANDATE, IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, OF COURSE, HE JUST GOT BACK FROM A TRIP DOWN TO THE WHITE HOUSE WHERE HE MET WITH DONALD TRUMP AND THEN IN THE PAST FEW DAYS OR SO BACK FROM JAPAN FOR A G20 LEADERS’ MEETING WHERE HE MET WITH A VARIETY OF WORLD LEADERS AND SALIMAH SHIVJI IS RINGING IN THE PRIME MINISTER AND HE WILL TALK TO US ABOUT WHAT HE’S THINKING ABOUT FOR CANADA DAY. AND WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE THAT HE WANTS TO SEND TO CANADIANS TODAY. OF COURSE, HE’LL TAKE TO THE STAGE AND GIVE AN OFFICIAL SPEECH AS WELL. AND MAYBE RYAN REYNOLDS WOULD TOO. I DON’T THINK THAT ANYONE KNOWS THAT HE’S HERE. I FEEL THAT I SHOULD TURN AROUND AND LET EVERYONE KNOW.>>Andrew: WHERE WERE WE SEEING HIM?>>Rosemary: I THINK THAT THE CHAIRS ARE ON THE OPPOSITE LAWN SO WE’RE NOT GOING TO GET HIM OVER HERE, IF THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE THINKING. [laughter] I’LL SEND YOU.[laughter] BUT YOU HAVE TO BRING HIM BACK. THAT’S THE ONLY PART OF IT.>>Andrew: SO AS YOU CAN SEE, BOY, LOOK AT THE SIZE — THAT’S A GOOD-LOOKING CROWD. IT’S A VERY DIFFERENT CROWD THAN LAST YEAR. EASILY MORE THAN DOUBLE, MAYBE EVEN TRIPLE. SALIMAH SHIVJI IS STANDING BY.>>Reporter: HI, GUYS, AND THE PRIME MINISTER IS HERE WITH ME AND I WANTED TO WISH YOU HAPPY CANADA DAY.>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: HAPPY CANADA DAY.>>Reporter: WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO CANADIANS?>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: THAT IT’S A MOMENT TO CELEBRATE, EVERYTHING THAT WE ACHIEVED TOGETHER AND EVERYTHING THAT WE WILL ACHIEVE TOGETHER. WE HAVE WORK TO DO TO CONTINUE TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY THE GREATEST PLACE ON EARTH AND WE NEED TO DO IT TOGETHER.>>Reporter: NOW ON THAT NOTE, YOU KNOW, WE DID RELEASE A POLL ACTUALLY COMMISSIONED BY CBC YESTERDAY THAT SHOWED THAT CANADIANS ARE FEELING ANXIOUS THIS CANADA DAY AND LOSING A BIT OF CONFIDENCE IN POLITICIANS. SO WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THOSE CANADIANS THAT FEEL THAT WAY?>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: THAT ANXIETY IS REAL AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE, ABOUT THEIR KIDS’ FUTURE AND THEIR RETIREMENT, ABOUT RECONCILIATION AND ALL SORTS OF THINGS, PARTICULARLY CLIMATE CHANGE. AND MY RESPONSIBILITY AS A POLITICIAN, AS A LEADER IS TO HELP TO ALLAY THOSE FEARS AND TO PUT FORWARD SOLUTIONS. AND OTHERS MIGHT CHOOSE TO AMPLIFY THEM, BUT I THINK WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS TO PUT FORWARD CONCRETE SOLUTIONS. THAT’S WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR FOUR YEARS AND HOPEFULLY WE’LL CONTINUE.>>Reporter: THIS IS YOUR FOURTH CANADA DAY EVENT AS PRIME MINISTER AND AS WE HEAD INTO THE ELECTION WITH MAYBE A BIT OF A FIGHT, HOW DOES IT FEEL THIS YEAR? DO YOU FEEL NOSTALGIA OR ANY DIFFERENT FEELING?>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: NO, IT FEELS GREAT. THIS IS ABOUT CELEBRATING AND THIS IS ABOUT MEETING WITH AS MANY CANADIANS AS POSSIBLE AND, YOU KNOW, SHARING OUR JOY IN THIS COUNTRY THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT, IT WON’T CONTINUE WITHOUT EFFORT BUT THAT WE ALL RECOMMIT TO DO TODAY AND EVERY DAY.>>Reporter: YOU WERE IN THE G20 MEETINGS IN JAPAN AND IT’S A DIFFERENT VIBE.>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: A LOT PORE FUN HERE.>>Reporter: I HAVE TO SAY PROBABLY. SO HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SEE THE CROWDS OUT HERE AND THE DIFFERENCE IN THE ROLES, ABOUT THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF CANADA AND WHERE WE’RE HEADED?>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: THE FACT IS THAT TO SERVE THIS COUNTRY WELL YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DO ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS. AND THE JOY THAT I FEEL AND THE INSPIRATION AND ENERGY THAT I GET FROM BEING ABLE TO SPEND TIME WITH CANADIANS ALLOWS ME TO DO THE REST.>>Reporter: THANK YOU SO MUCH, PRIME MINISTER AND THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS.>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: HAPPY CANADA DAY. YOU WANT TO SAY HAPPY CANADA DAY?>>[indiscernible] [laughter] THANK YOU, HAPPY CANADA DAY.>>Rosemary: I TOLD THAW HE WAS A HAM, HE’S THE HAM, YEAH. BUT HE’S JUST GOES THERE. IT’S THE RESPECT I HAVE FOR HIM.>>Andrew: I’M A FATHER OF A 5-YEAR-OLD MYSELF AND I KNOW HOW THEY CAN BE, SOMETIMES UNPREDICTABLE AND SOMETIMES HILARIOUS AND SOMETIMES INFURIATING.>>Rosemary: HILARIOUS. A BIT OF A POLITICAL TONE TO SOME OF THOSE ANSWERS WITHOUT GOING TOO PARTISAN, BUT YOU CAN TELL THAT IT’S IN THE BACK OF HIS MIND, OF COURSE, AS HE PAINT A PICTURE OF CONTRAST IN THE ELECTION.>>Andrew: YOU GET A SMATTERING OF POLITICS ON CANADA DAY AND IT’S NEVER SO EXPLICIT GENERALLY. AND TODAY I DON’T THINK THAT IT WILL BE AN EXCEPTION BUT YOU GET THAT FLAVOUR ON PARLIAMENT HILL. I MEAN, IT IS WHERE WE ARE.>>Rosemary: THAT’S RIGHT. AND I WOULD BE UPSET IF THERE WASN’T ANY. SO WE’RE GOING TO — WE HAVEN’T BEEN THERE YET AND WE’LL THROW TO ANITA BATHE IN STEEVESTON WHICH IS APPARENTLY A FABULOUS PLACE, ANITA. ANDREW HAS BEEN THERE AND I HAVEN’T. BUT TELL ME WHAT PEOPLE THERE ARE UP TO TODAY?>>Reporter: IT IS AWESOME. UP TO 100,000 PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO BE HERE FOR THE PARADE TODAY. 84 FLOATS INVOLVED. NOW, OF COURSE, WE HERE ON THE WEST COAST ARE JUST GETTING OUR CANADA DAY STARTED BUT, ROSIE AND ANDREW, WE PLAN TO PARTY ALL DAY LONG AND HOPEFULLY LATER THAN THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. BUT I WANT TO SHOW YOU AND TAKE YOU INSIDE OF THE SPIRIT OF STEEVESTON, BECAUSE A LOT GOES INTO PUTTING THESE FLOATS TOGETHER. AND MY CAMERAMAN DILLON WILL MEET US ON THE OTHER SIDE THOUGH I SHOULD SAY HI FIRST TO SAMMY THE SALMON. BECAUSE THIS IS THE STEEVESTON SALMON FESTIVAL. BUT LET’S GO INSIDE — THANKS, SAMMY. AND WE’LL GO INSIDE HERE AND WE’LL TALK TO STORMER. NOW STORMER HAS A TOUGH TASK TODAY AND WHEN I SAY A TOUGH TASK IT REALLY IS TOUGH BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO DRIVE THIS THING. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE ANGLE IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE WHERE YOU’RE GOING AND SO HOW DO YOU DO IT?>>SAFETY IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US AND WE ONLY HAVE THREE PORT HOLES ON THIS. SO WE PUT TWO PEOPLE ON EACH WHEEL TO MAKE SURE. BECAUSE PEOPLE GET EXCITED ABOUT THIS BOAT AND THEY GET REALLY EXCITED ABOUT SAMMY WHO YOU HAVE MET ALREADY. AND WE SOMETIMES HAVE THE YOUNGER KIDS COME RUSHING TO THE BOAT AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT NO ONE RUNS UP BECAUSE I CAN’T SEE THEM. AND I’M DRIVING STRAIGHT PRETTY MUCH.>>Reporter: ALMOST PRETTY MUCH BLIND HERE?>>ALMOST.>>Reporter: AND IT’S KIND OF SCARY?>>THAT’S WHY WE HAVE THE PEOPLE ON THE WHEELS TO MAKE SURE THAT NO ONE COMES IN FRONT OF US.>>Reporter: A LOT GOES INTO PUTTING A FLOAT LIKE THIS TOGETHER. BEAUTIFUL DETAIL INVOLVED. WHAT DID IT TAKE?>>A LOT OF PLANNING. IT WAS ABOUT — CLOSE TO A YEAR, ABOUT EIGHT MONTHS OF PLANNING AND BUILDING AND IT WAS REALLY EXCITING BECAUSE WE HADN’T HAD A FLOAT FOR A LONG TIME IN OUR OWN PARADE SO WE PUT THIS TOGETHER AND IT WAS A LOT OF THOUGHT FROM A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY AND IT WAS — IT WAS PRETTY EXCITING WHEN WE GOT THE FINISHED PRODUCT.>>Reporter: EIGHT MONTHS, WOW, THANK YOU SO MUCH, STORMER. NOW THIS FLOAT IS GOING TO BE GOING — WATCH MY STEP HERE — THIS FLOAT IS GOING TO BE GOING ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE END OF THE PARADE. AT THE END OF THAT ROUTE IS A SALMON BAKE, 3,000 PIECES OF WILD SALMON WILL BE COOKED UP HERE TODAY, ROSIE AND ANDREW. THAT’S ABOUT 1,200-POUNDS SO WE’RE EXCITED TO SHOW THAW LATER ON. AND EVERYONE HERE IS PLANNING ON LEAVING CANADA DAY WITH SOME FULL BELLIES.>>Andrew: BUT CAN YOU SHOW US MORE OF SAMMY. HE’S BEHIND YOU. [laughter]>>Reporter: SAMMY, THEY WANT TO SEE MORE OF YOU. SAMMY DOESN’T TALK THOUGH SO WE’LL HAVE TO ADMIRE HIS COSTUME HERE. [laughter]>>Andrew: BUT, NO, SAMMY –>>Reporter: SAMMY IS ALL ABOUT –>>Andrew: GO AHEAD, I CUT YOU OFF, ANITA.>>Reporter: WELL, STEEVESTON IS REALLY ABOUT SALMON SO TODAY YOU’LL SEE SALMON EVERYWHERE ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE AND SAMMY WILL RUN UP AND DOWN, RIGHT AND DANCING AS MUCH AS HE CAN. AND EVERYONE IS POSING FOR PICTURES WITH SAMMY AND REALLY EXCITED. HE’S KIND OF A HIT OF THE PARADE.>>Andrew: YEAH AND YOU KNOW, I SHOULD SAY THAT WE’RE LAUGHING BUT THIS IS A REALLY GOOD-NATURED LAUGH BECAUSE SAMMY THE SALMON IS REALLY A BIG DEAL DOWN THERE IN STEEVESTON. HE’S KNOWN AS THE MIGHTIEST SOCKEYE THAT EVER NAVIGATED THE FRASER RIVER.>>Rosemary: AND WE LEARN SO MUCH ON THIS CANADA DAY.>>Reporter: AND YOU’RE THE MIGHTIEST SOCKEYE.>>Andrew: HE IS, HE IS, I’M NOT MAKING THAT UP. THIS IS REAL STUFF.>>Reporter: YOU HAVE GOTTEN HIM REALLY EXCITED, ANDREW.>>Rosemary: ENJOY YOUR 3,000 PIECES OF SALMON, ANITA, I APPRECIATE THAT.>>Reporter: THANK YOU.>>Rosemary: WOW, SAMMY — I HAD NO IDEA. WE WANT TO TAKE YOU BACK TO CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. AND YOU MIGHT REMEMBER THAT THEY WERE GOING TO ATTEMPT A LIVING FLAG BUT IT’S VERY BLUSTERY SO THIS IS WHAT THEY HAVE COME UP WITH. IT’S OKAY.>>Andrew: AND JAY WAS SAYING THAT YOU ONLY NEED 65 — I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE THAT IS BUT IT LOOKS ABOUT 65.>>Rosemary: THE RIGHT PART OF THE LEAF IS A BIT LEAF IS WHAT I’D SAY. [laughter]>>Andrew: IT’S NOT THE FINISHED PRODUCT THAT MATTERS.>>Rosemary: IT’S THE SPIRIT?>>Andrew: IT’S THE SPIRIT AND EFFORT. LET’S LISTEN IN AND THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.>>Rosemary: LET’S LOOK AT WHAT IT COULD LOOK LIKE, OKAY, IF YOU WANT TO BEAT THE WORD RECORD IN TRENTON AS THEY DID. SO THAT’S 4,000 PEOPLE COMPARED TO THE MAYBE 60, MAYBE NOT, IN CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. BUT, MAN, THOSE ISLANDERS, THEY HAVE GOOD SPIRIT, DON’T THEY? MY FRIENDS, WHAT A PLEASURE IT IS TO BE WITH YOU HERE TODAY TO CELEBRATE CANADA AND CANADIANS! [Applause] CANADA DAY IS A TRADITION FOR MANY OF US AND I COULDN’T BE HAPPIER TO BE BACK WITH YOU AGAIN THIS YEAR. BECAUSE LAST YEAR AS YOU MIGHT REMEMBER WE DECIDED TO DO THINGS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY. WE STARTED THE DAY IN LEAMINGTON, ONTARIO, BEFORE HEADING TO REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN, AND ENDING IN DAWSON CITY, YUKON. [Speaking French] (Voice of Translator): SOME PEOPLE MAY THINK THAT WE DECIDED TO END THE DAY IN DAWSON CITY BECAUSE THE SUN SETS AFTER MIDNIGHT AND PEOPLE PARTY LATE INTO THE NIGHT, BUT, UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS NOT THE REASON. MANY PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER THAT A FEW WEEKS BEFORE CANADA DAY THAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED ITS INTENTION TO IMPOSE STEEL — TARIFFS ON STEEL AND ALUMINUM FROM CANADA. [end of translation] IT CREATED A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY FOR THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. SO LAST YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS WERE BITTERSWEET FOR MANY COMMUNITIES. BUT IN LEAMINGTON, IN REGINA, AND IN DAWSON CITY, WE ACTUALLY WITNESSED SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL AND VERY CANADIAN. WE SAW PEOPLE BEING THERE FOR EACH OTHER DURING TOUGH TIMES. NEIGHBOURS ORGANIZING COMMUNITY DINNERS. FRIENDS WERE CHECKING IN WITH EACH OTHER. GRANDPARENTS WERE COMING TO TOWN TO WATCH THE KIDS AND GIVE THE PARENTS A BREAK. AND IN THE WEEKS THAT FOLLOWED A WAVE OF SOLIDARITY SWEPT ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE PUT UP A UNITED FRONT AND WE LEANED ON EACH OTHER AND WE HAD EACH OTHER’S BACKS AND WE DIDN’T GET PUSHED AROUND. [Applause] IT’S NOT JUST WHAT WE DO WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, IT’S WHO WE ARE AS CANADIANS. [Applause] MY FRIENDS, THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE WHEN WE LIFT EACH OTHER UP. [Speaking French] (Voice of Translator): AND THE WAY THAT WE CAME TOGETHER LAST YEAR SHOULD SURPRISE NO ONE. OUR COUNTRY WAS SHAPED BY PEOPLE WHO STAND UP FOR EACH OTHER AND WHO HELP EACH OTHER AND WHO WORK HARD. PEOPLE WHO CHOOSE GENEROSITY AND COMPASSION AND HOPE. AND IT IS OUR DETERMINATION TO PUT THOSE VALUES INTO PRACTISE EVERY DAY THAT HAS MADE US SUCH A SUCCESSFUL COUNTRY. EVERY DAY CANADIANS SHOW THE REST OF THE WORLD THAT A MULTICULTURAL AND AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY IS A STRONG SOCIETY. [Applause] A RESILIENT SOCIETY, LOOKING RESOLUTELY TO THE FUTURE AND READY TO MEET THE MAJOR CHALLENGES OF OUR TIMES. WHETHER IT’S CLIMATE CHANGE, RECONCILIATION, OR GENDER EQUALITY. [end of translation] CANADIANS HAVE SO MUCH TO BE PROUD OF THIS YEAR AND I’M NOT JUST TALKING ABOUT THE RAPTORS. [Applause] SINCE 2015, YOU’VE CREATED ONE MILLION JOBS, THE MAJORITY OF WHICH ARE FULL TIME. AS OF THIS MAY, 85 LONG-TERM DRINKING WATER ADVISORIES HAVE BEEN LIFTED AND 825,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING ALMOST 300,000 KIDS, ARE NO LONGER LIVING IN POVERTY IN CANADA. [Cheers and Applause] THIS IS WHO WE ARE AS CANADIANS. THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER AND LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER. AS A COUNTRY IT’S IMPORTANT THAT WE CELEBRATE OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THAT WE TAKE PRIDE IN HOW FAR WE’VE COME. BUT WE CAN’T FORGET THAT CANADA DID NOT HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT AND WON’T CONTINUE WITHOUT EFFORT AND HARD WORK. WE CAN AND WE MUST CONTINUE TO MAKE OUR COUNTRY EVEN BETTER. WE OWE IT TO THE PARENTS PICKING UP EXTRA SHIFTS TO GIVE THEIR KIDS THE BEST POSSIBLE START IN LIFE. WE OWE IT TO THE NEWCOMER BUILDING A NEW LIFE. TO THE TEACHER INSPIRING OUR KIDS. TO THE COMMUNITY LEADER, TRYING TO ENACT CHANGE. WE OWE IT TO CANADIANS WHO EVERY DAY MAKE THIS COUNTRY STRONGER WITH ACTS OF KINDNESS, COURAGE AND COMPASSION, BOTH BIG AND SMALL. 1. Thank God we donโ€™t live in Mainland China! A few hundred thousand Mainland Chinese recently fled China to come to Canada! Iโ€™m sure they feel a lot better about their lives now!

  2. I am proud of being a Indigenous person and I can sing O'Canada in Cree…

European can't relate and left the chat
Latino can't relate and left the chat
black can't relate and left the chat
Asian can't relate and left the chat
Middle Eastern can't relate and left the chat…

  3. Canada has no core culture, just a bunch of immigrants, young and old, coming here to dilute and further disintegrating each other's culture..be it Europe, Middle East, Asia, Latin America…etc.
Nothing "multi-culture" about this country, just people vying to be on top of the other races/cultures. Watch out Asian immigrants are slowly dominating Ontario and BC with their own unique set of cultures, values further creating cultural-disconnect. Canada is a good social engineering experimental country. Better yet, I think Native Amerian should just step up and make everyone follow their ways of life…if that's even possible at all. Monolithic culture creates peace and stability, but multiculturalism creates distrust amongst ourselves and further embroil ourselves into hate mentality.

  4. Why do all of your videos pertaining to trudeau have the comments disabled? Do you want to brain wash the public because of your paid for news coverage? Be a news media and send your reporter's to document the news good or bad. As Canadians CBC needs to tell the truth About all of Canada.

  5. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA !! ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

  6. I in the future the United Kingdom on behalf of Canada will take over the united states And Mexico And Central America as A head is A Queen.

  7. WE ARE THE TRUE NORTH STRONG AND FREE SO GET SOCIAL JUSTICE CLASSES OUT OF OUR COLLEGES. WE HAVE SNOW BUT NO SNOW FLAKES WANTED…..WE WILL NEVER BOW TO SOCIALIST GLOBALISM WITH THESE QUACKS IN POWER…GOD BLESS YOU CANADA !!!!

  8. Happy 152nd birthday Canada! Wishing everyone a bottle of fresh maple syrup! ๐Ÿ˜‹ How tasty. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

  9. Min 57:00 Polls show PM that Canadians are "anxious" about Politicians (Translation – they want you out and hate your steaming guts – do you think you can yell your way out of the mess you have foisted on the nation? Trudeau – Heck no, I dont care about Canadians, I have never cared about anything they want or care about". So PM, this is your 4th and last Canada Day, how do YOU feel – Great!. I will get a pension right, right?)

  10. I not understands too much about how is the government of Canada but God told me that wants you guys to keep evolving your titles as nation, because titles as state, as nation is also a way to honor the people and the person choosen, politics is also a way to creates jobs and you guys must to evolve to titles given by states and nation because that creates more jobs too, and you can't be stocked forever in some titles given by queen or king because these guys made their history already is time of the people to make their history and be honored by the titles they want, strong titles that make they be honored as a nation, not a titles like you guys are below the queen or king

  11. What a beautiful day! Not many men and women know how they can easily control and lose weight for their health and beauty purposes.. Details on my channel..๐ŸŒน

  12. What ? It takes 10-15 years for the parliament building to do the renovation. I am wondering how much would be the total cost of renovation. In China, they can build a city from scratch in 5 years. Why it takes so long.here for the renovation .

  13. Shame. Until Justin Trudeau has been ejected from parliament, Canadians have nothing to celebrate. Tremendous shame and embarassment.
Shame on Canadians for electing that little weasel into parliament. Shame.

  15. Yuk it up Canada you got 5 minutes before the US Russia and The Chinx carve you up into manageable bites. It was nice while it lasted.๐Ÿ˜จ

  16. The news is there were two Asian men before the camera started rolling…the female anchor ate the other Asian man.

  17. Hate charges apply for the song Indigenous sang in front of our children. One line says we don't like your kind. Why was this song allowed to be sung on Canada Day Indigenous trying to take credit for what the white man founded and built. Most Indigenous don't consider themselves Canadian why re they allowed to ruin our holiday bye promoting hatred toward the people who founded and built Canada on Canada Day. Jealously and hate racism is what promotes Indigenous. Charge them with hate speech and get them away from our children they hate white children too much teaching our children that their grandparents are raciest nd their parents are thieves Charge them with hate for this song and get therm away from our children.
